Avgas Prices @ Australian Airfields
Hey there
I was interested in finding out more about Avgas prices at different rural and remote airfields around Australia for flight planning scenarios. I am planning on calling up local airport fuel operators as listed in the AIP/ERSAs to ask for particular pricing structures - but does anyone know if there's any better way of going about it!? E.g. - standard pricing indexes (... wishful thinking?) - up-to-date pricing observations (like how mogas fuel-watch apps work... pie-in-the sky thinking?) In anycase - I'd appreciate any tips or comments about getting fuel in rural areas. I'd be interested to know how reliable the services are also! Cheers M@ |
If you have Oz Runways, there is a tab on there which will display fuel prices at many places. It may not be up to date but is pretty close.
|
There's some places where the Avgas price isn't even shown at the bowser. And often the machine has run out of paper for your receipt.
I have been pleasantly surprised at the competitive prices at two remote destinations. Coober Pedy in S.A. and Thargomindah in Qld. The prices being cheaper than YSCB at the same time. Go figure.. |
Caboolture = $1.91
Barcaldine = $1.99 |
Thanks everyone for the feedback :)
@Fujii - great suggestion, I was just looking into getting OzRunways @Jabawocky - $1.95 at Bundaberg (the only place that I've contacted so far) |
And Lilydale in outer metro Melbourne is $2.002!!
|
Where they get you in Australia is not so much the fuel price, but the undocumented callout fees.

Avgas prices
Bourke NSW $2.00 24 hour Card access.No landing charges.

These fuel prices are insane, it was only 6 or 7 years ago when AVGAS was only around 20 cents more than than the price of regular unleaded petrol at a city petrol station.
|
Expect to pay $3.00 or more in the outback and I would be asking if they have fuel rather than how much does it cost.
|
What outback places would they be, Rod? I've been to some quite outbacky places where the fuel was less expensive than some city aerodromes.
But I agree with your other point: Availability is the more important consideration out where aerodromes are few and far between. |
I have recently come back from the Flinders Ranges and found the fuel prices to be reasonable given the remoteness and (I suspect) limited sales in some of these places (e.g. Leigh Creek).
Before leaving home I used Oz Runways to plan my fuel stops. Some quick calculations soon showed there wasn't anything to be gained flying out of my way for a saving of even 10-20cents. Availability is the most important issue for me. |
it was only 6 or 7 years ago when AVGAS was only around 20 cents more than than the price of regular unleaded petrol at a city petrol station. I was then living in a house on a regional Airfield, working for a Regional Airline and had a TA22 Toyota Celica with a somewhat 'worked':hmm: twin cam engine.:ooh: It pinged like hell on regular Unleaded and went like hell on AVGAS!:E:ok: |
@ havick that's true - even when I emailed fuel operators they were especially cagey about answering that... I guess phoning is the surest way to find out.
Does anyone actually know where OzRunways gets their fuel pricing data? Since everyone likes to keep current on fuel prices - perhaps post what you know to my online spreadsheet? https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing I'd love to map it all out as a free resource for other pilots and people interested in historical prices... open data now! |

Indeed.
But I tend to get fuel at YLEC or YCBP before lobbing into YWMC. Trev makes more than enough out of us on the beers and the accommodation and landing fees. Jiggered if I'm going to pay $1.05 per litre premium for AVGAS as well! Not many options at YBDV and YINN though... |
Is Avgas cheaper in Qld like standard automotive fuel is (due to taxing arrangements being different in QLD) ?
|
Tyabb, Vic $1.98, claims to be 2c more than Moorabbin, but Moorabbin is $1.83.

All of that goes straight on the AVGAS price. |
Don't get me wrong - I'm not criticising Trev. He's entitled to charge whatever he likes for AVGAS and any other goods and services he provides, and I'm very, very glad that he makes them available. But my colleagues and I would rather save around $300 by uplifting fuel at YLEC or YCBP, and spend that at Trev's pub!
