GA ops into Melbourne Airport Tullamarine

If I needed to drop a passenger off at YMML to catch a domestic connection as a one off operation, apart from the $328.03 landing fee which I am aware of, where would said passenger be dropped off?

I can't see any dedicated GA apron/terminal in the ERSA or AIP charts.

Don't really require services of a handling agent as it would literally involve dropping said pax off with hand luggage and them making their own way to the main terminals, depending on the dropoff location.

Does anyone have any info or recent experience doing this?

I did 14 years in Melbourne tower. Go to Essendon and get a taxi, it will be much easier.

I flew a C182 in there about 5 years ago (about $275). They sent a 'follow me' car out to greet us. They took us down to the freight apron to park. A Tarago met us, drove us up to the top level (grabbed a coffee). They asked us what time we wanted to head back to the aircraft. Come picked us up and took us back to the aircraft. It was a hoot!

We did it at 3am (to minimise delays). That was 5 years ago. You can't get a VFR clearance through the TMA these days so I wouldn't expect one into Tullamarine unless you are IFR.

The "good old days" of GA ops into Tulla are long gone. EN and taxi/Uber is quicker and cheaper, let alone much, much easier :ok:

OK thanks everyone. We'll look at dropping pax off at EN instead.

Landing fee for a PA 28 Archer at En is $75 as well..

I remember when it was free :(

But that was back in the good ol' days when our Commonwealth Government still owned YMEN. These days, it's leased or owned by LINFOX.

Just count yourself lucky that LINFOX are prepared to let you land there. For they don't have to!

(No wonder that the rich have got much richer in recent years. Whilst the poorer...)

My old flying school used to do trips to YMML from Moorabbin in the 90's which included a visit to the tower as well as to the radar room. And I've done one flight myself as well taking a few friends along. Those days, it costs around $40 a landing, but those days are long gone now.

I don't know whether YMML charges for the ILS but LinFox sure does for both the ILS at YMEN and YMAV.

EN access to and from airside is cumbersome, unless you are a regular user with the local airside card pass. if you arrive in odd hours its hard to get hold of grou nd security to let you thru. be aware.

You'll probably end up over at the old John Holland hangers. The freighter apron is pretty tightly used now, It's half gone to T4 and Jetstar.

There is a tonne of International heavies launching this year, not sure where they are going to park them all. Probably just block off a few more taxiways and stick them there..

Forget Building airline parking bays when you can build more car parks!

Only had Etihad/Emirates/Cathay/Brunei/China Southern/Sichuan/Jetstar parked on taxiways the other Saturday due to nowhere to put them.

(I thought it was some sort of newfound aircraft graveyard!)

So true, Fizflyer!

We planned our recent early morning departure from EN within the G.A.gate operating hours. The security guy answered his mobile and attended. All good!

(By the way, for anyone arriving at EN after a long flight: There are toilets in the adjacent terminal building once you leave the G.A.gate. Walk past all the old buildings with locked toilets and turn left.)

I believe there is a free shuttle from EN to ML these days - worth a call to Essendon Airport and ask them. If you need someone to attend to get you in/out of the airside area, just ask the guys/gals in the TWR and they will get the safety officer to assist (during tower hours of course).

Have fun!

So, once the let us out from the level 3 restrictions and I'm allowed to fly my 172 again, what are the chances of getting a clearance to do a touch and go at Tullamarine? Once in a lifetime opportunity...

Flight training is still allowed. Do it as part of a flight review :p

What are the chances? Very good providing there's not much traffic about. Worst that will happen is ATC says no! You'll stand a much better chance if you file IFR, too.

Be aware a landing fee of $366 will apply plus whatever fees you pay for an approach.

Pretty cheap for the chance to land at YMML!

I guess we took it for granted once (back in the 70-80's) that you could land anywhere for nicks! I've got a photo (somewhere) of VH-TIZ I/we parked outside the end of the AN finger where Kendell's used to park at Tulla, just flew in one day for a coffe at the terminal whilst we stood on the observation deck watching VC10's etc come and go! -)

I used to see a white Bonanza(?) in QF colours (well, white with a red tail at least) parked against the southern hangar on Operations Road. In fact a check of Google Earth shows a lighty still there.

What is the story with that one?
