ABC are reporting a cyber attack on the BoM Supercomputer.

Must be the cause of the poor forecasting of late!

China blamed for 'massive' cyber attack on Bureau of Meteorology supercomputer - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

"...the Bureau's chief executive Robert Vertessy told Radio National that his agency had evolved "from what was once just a straight weather service to what I would call now a more broad-based environmental intelligence agency"."

How does one cyber attack a rock on a chain hung out in an exposed area?

Not to worry. Any information that the hackers gleaned, will only have a 50% chance of being accurate, anyway. :E

I seem to recall - quite a number of years ago now, before weather information-gathering became better organised and seriously enlarged - that the BOM loudly and proudly proclaimed, that in the past year, they had had a forecasting accuracy rate, that had reached a new high - 48% accuracy.

Somebody immediately pointed out that if the BOM had totally reversed its forecast for each day of the preceding year (i.e. - said it was going to rain, instead of forecasting fine, and vice versa) - then the forecasting accuracy rate would have jumped to 52%!

Needless to say, we never heard the BOM brag about its accuracy rate again for quite some time - no doubt until the major embarrassment subsided.

Wish I owned the company going to receive this income.

Just hope its not the same company that left it open to the 'massive breach', in the first place.

sell aussie assets to make foreign intel easier
 

I have some good ideas,

Lets sell strategic federal assets such as ports so that foreigners have an easier base from which to spy on our defence assets. a beaut idea; we can save on not having to secure our systems!

My wife suggests that it would be more cost effective to bring in politicians on 457 visas, then they can pick fruit when parliament is not in session (a bonzer idea),

We can also save money by using IT infrastructure rented from overseas. (oops...... I think this is known as cloud computing and cloud email - some companies are already doing that), A Ripper idea

Replace all Aussie labour with foreign labour: that way we can never work again. a fanbloodytastic idea.

Hang on, sell the entire country - divide the assets between aussie citizens and we can all move to New Zealand. This idea would stand up better than a brick sh*thouse in a gale.

So to all Aussie pollies: Stop selling us out you miserable self-centred pr*cks.

Reason would suggest, it'd be good practice to have a look at the Tide Chart- let alone, what maybe/may not be predicted (loose term that...) for the Ord and all the other stuff- (S. Kidman, when it happens..) etc. etc, that 'one' may want going forward................

A 'Regulator' in Aviation terms would probably expect some such due-diligence................, maybe not...????

IMHO, the BoM has had a steadily decreasing ability to accurately predict weather over the past 10 years.

At around 8:30pm Friday night the TAF for YMML was CAVOK. Around 10 hours later there was thick fog at Melbourne. Last night 9:30pm CAVOK. 6:00am this morning there was a PROB30 for Mist and broken at 0500'.

If the BoM cannot accurately predict weather 12 hours in advance at Australia's second busiest airport then there is a problem! This isn't new, or even that uncommon anymore.

Sadly, some of the comments from the ABC article reveal how out of touch the BoM is with reality

I would suggest that the good Doctor revise his meds. This is pure fantasy.

Hundreds of millions? Really? I worked on some massive IT projects in my day. Hundreds of millions?? That means a complete replacement of the current system with more than one replacement system. At least that's what it would mean in the corporate world. In the BoM, it probably just means an upgrade and a reshuffle.

The really "smart" guys and gals within Defence may have discovered a rather clever strategy for the Port of Darwin. Lease the place to a Chinese corporation with close ties to the leadership. What's the chance then that the place will ever be bombed?

By intercepting the webcam feed and replacing it with video of another rock on a chain, in a completely different exposed area!
