C185/180 rental
 
Hello all, wanting to rent a C180/185, or even better a C195, for about 2 weeks next march. Not too worried where in New Zealand she lives, I can get there without any hassles. I'll do about 20 odd hours in it over the 2 weeks. I have a current ATPL, lots of taildragger time, 10,000hrs TT, radial engine experience as well...etc. PM me if you prefer or post on here...thanks prooners!:ok:

If you don't know someone already who'll let you fly their precious then I don't fancy your chances at that time of the year seeing as WoW is on at that time and the C180/185 club have a fly in the week before, and all that.

Ya gotta love pprune....ask a simple question and get yourself abused because of....what exactly Flying Binghi?...because of a location joke...? Guess you didn't read the rest of the post, which if you had, wasn't to brag but to show that I'm quite serious and quite capable. Stupid comments coming from an at best ultralight or MSFS pilot are a bit rich. If you have nothing helpful to post, which clearly you don't, then don't post at all, or at least get your mummy to approve it first.:rolleyes:

Thanks 27/09, didn't know about the fly in, but was hoping to finish up at WoW and then homewards from there. Any HELPFUL hints much appreciated, any abuse, don't bother.

Fork, get that speed machine over to NZ, I'll point the way around.

Sadly nosegear, the answers experienced are merely indicative of the macho and somewhat insular culture in GA that exists in certain circles in Oz an NZ. If you haven't already experienced it (I don't know your background etc) then apart from it being a bit off putting it also shows those of us who have ventured beyond our home shores that the "hard yards" and the "185's a mans aeroplane" BS is just that, sure anything with a tailwheel can be a challenge at times...but so is a straight shot with a 1 iron.
Ignore the flat earthers' and good luck finding something that isn't owned by a weekend warrior with a small d1ck complex:ok:

Hey Nosegear, yeah the timing may make it a bit of a struggle. But I would suggest having a yarn to the clubs / outfits, particularly in the south island - Ashburton, Rangiora and Wanaka spring to mind. At the very least there should be a few fellas out there willing to give you their time. Best of luck, just watch the WX, it can get a bit fiddly for long jaunts at this time of year, she's pretty blowy at the moment.

I nearly included this in my other post.

I know you weren't boasting when you listed your flying experience. However, in my experience this level flying experience

I have a current ATPL, lots of taildragger time, 10,000hrs TT, radial engine experience as well..
means nothing.

I've seen pilots with these levels of experience put some pretty serious scratches on other peoples pride and joy. If someone came along quoting these levels of experience to hire something like a C185 I'd probably run a mile unless they had recent relative experience.

Unfortunately we're all only as good as our recent experience. A current ATPL and 1000's of hours doesn't necessarily make you any good on an aircraft that you flew a while ago. Frankly a 150 hour PPL who has 50 hours on type in that last few months is quite likely to be a better bet.

Please don't take this as a reflection on you personally, you may well have the recent experience I speak of.

I think Haughtney might have access to a C180/185, he might have some contacts who can help.

Yep, plenty of the small syndrome abounds. That's why some have to own a muscle car, big launch, or in aviation a tail dragger :E.

I don't own any of these, I'm not sure what that says about me, perhaps a small wallet. :sad:

However it is their pride and joy and if you want to fly it, and they are willing to lend it, you do so by abiding by their rules. Even if they think you need to be current in the Space Shuttle. Simple.

I don't think Bingi was abusing you, but I note he has deleted his post.

I have a tail wheel aeroplane and I don't hire it to anyone, regardless of experience. Apart from the few flying schools who operate tail wheels, I don't know of anyone who would hire one. I know of several 185's, the story is the same, no hire, never. Bingi was bluntly saying the state of the times in his own style. Tail wheel aeroplanes are yesterdays toy.

Good luck with your search though, please update us if it is successful. There could well be someone and no harm is done by asking. Can I ask why a tail wheel is so important? What is wrong with a 206?

Yeah, my "Good luck with that" was sincere, with just a touch of sarcasm for reality! :E

I actually hired a C185 a couple of times from a flying school in SE Qld.

As my old log book just happened to be sitting on my desk beside the puter, I looked it up.

PPL with 308 hrs total at the time! 40 hrs on tail draggers with about half of that on C180/185. :ok:

But that was 1980 - back in the days before someone decided that you need to be endorsed on the Space Shuttle before you can handle anything more complex than a 172!

Can't say I have ever seen a 180/185 available for private hire since - in Oz or NZ!

Interestingly, the C185 I hired (VH-IVG) is still going strong - last see by me in Cairns a couple of years ago - wearing BIG tundra tires.

I have flown five other C180/185s:

C180
VH-SDA - was privately owned in 1980 - now in the Seventh Day Adventist Museum

C185
VH-CJT - now dropping meat bombs in NZ - arrived there via a stint on the ice in Antarctica.
VH-IQS - still on the register, operating in Nth Qld
VH-KFT - rolled up in a ball! (No, not by me!)
VH-KGT - (KFTs identical twin) - also now on meat bombing duties in NZ, I believe!

Thanks for the helpful replies, haughtney, yes I've had a long back ground in GA and turbo props in NZ before moving off shore and I'm sadly familiar with the attitude of some. I'd add though that there are far more good people than bad, which is why I asked what I thought was a simple question, however, I do appreciate the replies and the advice from those of you there in Godzone.

27/09, no problems, I don't have a fragile ego and I know exactly what you mean regarding accidents from experienced pilots operating in an environment they are not current in. I try to keep my hand in as much as possible and have shares in several warbirds in NZ but sadly neither of them are available for this. Always interested in what your handle means....?

Aussie Bob, I flew them (C180/5) a lot in GA, and I just really enjoyed them, the extra challenges posed by tailwheels, the handling qualities etc etc. Nothing wrong with a 206, I flew them a lot too but as I say, I just really like the tailwheel.

Where haughtney says 'exists in certain circles in Oz' I would say exists in most circles. A lot of the time it's ignorance, a lot of the time it's dickheadedness.

I had a bloke loan me his Cirrus once, it didn't happen in Oz or NZ.

An excellent and experienced tailwheel instructor says 'flying a tailwheel aeroplane doesn't require undue skill, simply good training to the appropriate standard of competence'

Once this blokes competence is established you'd reckon he'd get a crack.

Actually, most of the posts have been helpful, apart from your first one, which was idiotic to say the least. Still not sure why you are on this thread making irrelevant comments? I simply asked a question, stated my experience so that anyone who MAY be considering it can make an initial judgement and go from there.
