NAIPS password!
 

So just tried to get a forecast via the naips app on my iPad. Password expired. Bugger. Go to naips site, can't remember the old password, ok send me the password via email. Not forethcoming.
Several attempts to recall my password, now locked out for 15 minutes.
For f$&k sake, a forecast, just a forecast please!
Why must everything be a f&@ken moonshot in this country!!!!:ugh::ugh:

It annoys the hell out of me why they insist on changing the password every 6 months.
Meaning I have to setup my iPhone App every time again with all the saved files.....!!!

I started a thread on this a couple of months back as to why NAIPS needed a password whereas the same forecasts are available on the BoM site without.

NAIPS: Not Actually Intended to Provide a Service.

NAIPs needs a passwords because of the features that can be accessed BEYOND that of just getting a weather Forecast.

What needs to be changed is the requirement to sign in to get a weather forecast IMHO, not the requirement for NAIPS to have a password at all.

It should not be difficult for them to implement an additional menu when not logged in that allows anyone access to basics such as getting a weather forecast or checking for last light etc...

According to T Miller at a CASA seminar I attended, we ARE to obtain our Met. info ONLY from 'The Approved Source' - which, surprise surprise, is Airservices Australia.....

Notwithstanding that 'they' obtain that very same info from......the Met Bureau..!!

And, when I was disseminating said info as a FSO, it arrived on the printer / computer, and was read out ''verbatim'....Direct from.... the Met Bureau.

And I do notice that the Met Bureau tel number was included at the bottom of Area Forecasts - 'for explanation'.....again, the Met Bureau....

Does NAIPS hold a current/correct email address for you?

People not keeping their email address up to date in systems/websites/forums is almost always the cause of not receiving an email following a password reset request.

Yes, complete pain in the arse. At least first warn, then change on next login.

When it asks for your password on the iPad just click "ok" and go back to the area forecast...all good.

NAIPS passwords are a bit of a joke, seeing as they email them to you in plain text along with the userid when you change them.

All the password is there for is to either gain funds from fining people who go flying without a forecast, or at a later date, when they think they can get away with it, charge money for said forecasts.

If you had/have spent as much time in Canberra as I have over the years, you might just come to understand that it is not my imagination that produces these many and varied ideas for "cost recovery". Unlike the Europeans, those damned Yanks keep making their GPS free --- unlike the proposals for the accurate signals from Galileo.

Indeed, the principle reason we will never have wide area GPS augmentation/WAAS, is nobody in Canberra could figure out how to charge users --- not confined to aviation.

It is a wonderful racket, create a legal requirement for a service, then charge for the service, with the inevitable fines for breaches of the legal requirement.

I think the NAIPS password thing arose after an issue with a court case of someone changing a flight plan of an aircraft they weren't on.

Maybe put the password on the Flight plan bits - but not the weather.

How about ARN and a non-changing, non-complex password if they really must?

I haven't been able to get an airservices login to work in over 5 years.
Notams? if they were important you wouldn't refuse to let me see them.

Love it! So much crap in our Aussie NOTAMs, impossible to filter that which might be relevant. If it's important, they'll tell you about it on the ATIS...

Back in the 'Ole Days' at the beginning of the changes when services to VFR were 'dropped', an official memo from HO came out discussing the 'introduction of a pricing regime to discourage participation.....'

Probably around 1991 or so......

The idea at the time WAS to charge for in flight info provided by FS, including the cancelling of SARTIMES, to discourage pilots from doing it, and so to immediately reduce the number of FSO's required....

From that, the SAR function was 'separated' from the In Flight regime, and CENSAR by phone to BN was the result.

There was no 'real way' of accounting for 'other info' requests, and so no charges could be sent.....to...ABC at ML FIR, ABC in BN FIR, ABC at ..'pick a place'....

A bit like in the early days of avcharges, FKE was heard reporting CIRA at Kunners, landed, and called 'clear', to be followed shortly thereafter by the REAL FKE, (FK-28 RPT JET) who was 'suitably impressed' - NOT!
