REX Cadet Questions
 
Hello, I know this topic has been discussed on here lots over the years but i feel that not so much recent information so i was wondering some of you guys could help me out.

I am currently completing Year 12 (studying Physics and Math Methods) and have a massive passion for aviation not just flying but the industry itself, i have done a TIFF flight but due to living in Rural Victoria have no access to local flight schools etc. I also have no means of affording the 'normal' option in the short term - the $25,000 would by why i need a GAP year

The idea of the Cadet program seems amazing to me and due to my situation seems the only option to follow my dream. I will still be putting in applications for UNI's and am planning to take a GAP year either way. I would plan to apply for the last intake of 2016.

May main Questions are:

Does the "PICUS programme" recently introduced make the program more attractive, by giving cadets a higher change of getting into the LHS than prior - does this actually happen?

What would be some impotent things to learn to give me the best chance of success if i do apply? Being for county Victoria it's not cheap to attend interviews in Wagga Wagga and Sydney

I see REX Offer a number of bases but what are the chances of actually getting ones like Melbourne or Albury?

The other thing i am concerned about is the low starting pay and having to likely live in the city - is this financially viable? One of the main things that makes me think that it is, is that if i go to UNI for say 4 years, i would have hopefully had 2-3 years full time employment with rex at the same period in life - does this make sense?

Also what happens during ground school and type endorsement - is this in Wagga and is accommodation still provided? (i know this is more a question during one of my interviews but thought i would ask)

BTW was looking for salary expectations and only found the 2005 pilot agreement, i believe there is a newer one - is this on the net?

Answering your last question.

Go to the FAIR WORK COMMISION WEBSITE and search for an agreement. There is one there from 2011. The base salaries are usually towards the end of most agreements. Holds true for this one as well. It will take you about 3 mins to search and download the document. Reading it in full is another matter all together, however will ensure you have all the facts, not crap from an internet forum.

I'd written up a more detailed response but about half way through my mood changed and I wasn't so inspired...

There seems to be a bit of passion that's missing from your post.

Thanks so much dehg5776! Great to hear that the PICUS Programme is working because in the years past getting to the LHS seemed like the biggest concern about the program. Also happy to hear about the income being sufficient to living in capitals. Hope if i do become i Pilot i meet more guys like you in the Industry!

Just because someone doesn't tell you it's all sunshine lollipops and rainbows doesn't make their opinion any less valid. Don't necessarily discount an opinion because you don't like the truth and or experience behind it. But at your age I didn't believe that either.

@j3pipercub I understand - was just thankful for the direct answers to the questions.

Also does anyone know when each of the intakes normally are, and when the interview/application process is finished for each? Mainly asking because if i am to apply next year, which intake would insure i had time to start UNI in 2017 if i was unsuccessful but still give me next year to work and make some money?

FYI

I believe many Cadets who have completed the training wait 12 months before getting a REX start date. May change in future to suit demand. Could be shorter, may be longer.

Check out the UNI of New South Wales. They have an excellent aviation degree programme and links with Qantas.

@Stiff Under Carriage Thanks for letting me know - didn't know their was such a time frame, but would be ok with that, would be able to head back home and do some part time work during that time i guess.

@4Greens - Thanks will look into that one, seen a few courses in Victoria but no partnered with any of the airlines

@FoolCorsePich - why would you say that? - Don't make a claim like that without backing it up

Also quick question when Rex says "The next intake (Rex020) is projected to begin at the Australian Airline Pilot Academy (AAPA), Wagga Wagga, for 23rd November 2015." Does this mean thats when applications close or when they hope have the interview process finished?
