UNSW to offer ?QantasLink approved? pilot training scheme | Australian Aviation

This was on the cards for a while, no mention of "cadetship" though...

Considering the professionalism, unity and goodwill displayed by all Qantaslink flight crew, (Wait.... are we talking about Eastern, Sunstate, Cobham or Network :confused:) I can imagine that they will all only be too happy to be available as mentors to young, keen and intelligent cadets who have the money to pay for a UNSW course!

These sort of 'preferred' or 'approved' airline cadetships are the way of the future. Given that the students get to to tap into the vast experience and network of already working flight crew gives them valuable exposure and will no doubt be of benefit to Qantaslink down the track!

..Cadet-ships would be a little more "guaranteed" employment no?.. This program may just take the cream of the crop for the QLink course as they see fit or are needed and everyone else is out on their bums??

I am going for the Cadet route at the moment, doesn't look like there is much other choice.. was talking to a mate up in Broome who reckons there's between 30-40 pilots sitting up there waiting for a gig.

Don't bother ... Prob get put on active hold for life pending space shuttle experience :ugh:

Mentor? With some low experience FO's, it can end up simply being Single Pilot IFR with a distraction in the right hand seat. It ends up being a hard stressful day at the office with these ones. However, most are good and it is the minority that think they know everything because they have 800hrs - but believe me, they are out there.

Tells you a lot about how this company values people, considering it still has over 40 people on "active hold" from their last traineeship who have lost a hell of a lot of money and time (and are still getting strung along by this mob).

The way I read it, is that the mentoring will happen while the students are still studying. Before they are offered any position within QantasLink.

UNSW Aviation degree students in the final year of their degree have been provided with mentoring through an agreement between AIPA and UNSW. This agreement has been in place for the last 7 plus years. Pilots from Qantas, Jetstar and QLink (and perhaps others) have all been instrumental in this program.

With the recruitment section firing up hopefully we will movement into QF mainline and this mentoring will be reinvigorated!

That's the problem, its "QantasLink Approved", but will it actually open any doors? :ugh:

GAhas always been the same for green pilots. Wait around somewhere until you get a start date.
It's always been shake a tree up north and a couple of dozen pilots fall out.

Yes, difficult for a fresh CPL, would it be more to do with luck being in the right place at the right time for those guys?


Anyway my reason for choosing my path:

I like the idea of a solid return for a little extra investment, rather than a slightly smaller investment (however still significant) and hoping "somebody" will offer me a job while having to work out of chicken treat. (no offence to those who have gone this path - you have my respect! :ok:)

..I know there are some politics and critical thinkers surrounding Cadet-ships, but I worked for mine up North the last 6 years - so we will not enter that discussion. :=

End of the day I am financially stable whilst getting a kick start into my career.. why wouldn't I? :}

Hi Keg, that is interesting and very heartening!

I'd imagine that the UNSW students would be inspired by having exposure to real airline pilots. Especially from the Qantas group.

As a long haul pilot, have you ever offered, or are you currently a part of any such mentoring courses?

Keg is far too polite to give you the answer you deserve, so i will. Keg has done as much or more volunteer work to support aspiring pilots than you or anyone on this forum.

I can only concur with the previous comment regarding Keg and what he has put back into the industry..

Having said that, there are quite a few pilots from another major airline that are actively mentoring up and coming pilots into our fraternity.

It isn't the exclusive domain of qantas.
