A LIGHT plane has reportedly crashed into the sea off North Stradbroke Island with six people on board.
A CareFlight rescue helicopter has been dispatched from the Sunshine Coast.

is really interesting if you look at the historical radar data leading up to what I assume is the accident. The trouble is it is right on the edge of the map range and you seem to lose the aircraft right at the critical moment but it looks like there are two aircraft flying in loose stream formation at approximately 1500 feet heading northbound overwater. Then, one of the symbols stops and the other continues off the screen, it then shows again at the northern end of the island, does a couple of orbits like it is looking for some one and then heads back southbound again, probably looking for the aircraft he was flying with ?

I could very well be wrong but it is very interesting to look at the data provided by the tracking system

UPDATE - 2.01pm: One person has died after an ultralight plane crashed into the sea off North Stradbroke Island, police have confirmed. Despite fears for five other people, nobody else was on board the plane, a police spokesman has since said. An Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) spokeswoman said the male pilot crashed after taking off from an airstrip at Dunwich, on the island, about 10am.

“It’s still not clear where the destination was,” she said.

A light aircraft has crashed into the sea off North Stradbroke Island, with fears those on board are unlikely to have survived.
Emergency services are scouring the area after it plunged into the ocean on Saturday morning.
It was unclear how many people were on board and police would only confirm that it was a six-seater aircraft.
Television crews have tweeted photos of wreckage as helicopters search the area.
An Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) spokeswoman said a distress beacon was activated at 11.20am, about four nautical miles south of Point Lookout.
Police say there is currently no information to suggest how many people were aboard the flight or what caused the crash.
An exclusion zone is being put in place and will encompass George Nothling Drive and The Causeway.

No name released yet, however Ten News say pilot was a 64yo English immigrant flying an RA reg aircraft that he had bought within the last few weeks. Trying to work out what it was from the wreck photo, water is unforgiving and the aircraft has been reduced to pretty much kit form. RIP, not the way you expect a jolly out to the island on a sunny day to end.

So from this news report it seems there was only the pilot. ATSB don't seem to investigating. Police are doing their own investigation with help of an 'expert' from Melbourne.
