YMMB Without A Current Asic
 

Through my own stupidity I let my ASIC expire and then discovered I needed to fly somewhere. I thought I understood that it was possible to fly into, and out of, YMMB without an ASIC through a convoluted system of escorts and visitors permits.

Furthermore CASA specifically stated that "only the RPT" part of the aerodrome is security controlled. This is bull****.

I went through all the hoops only to be told "you can't leave without an ASIC".

Be warned, leave the place alone.

I've never been asked to show my ASIC at YMMB. Most of the time I just leave in the plane anyway.

Years ago the LAMEs mentioned that Federal Police (?) would do the rounds checking ASICs, but I hadn't heard of this recently.

I think the reality is that, unless you paint an Islamic State flag on the side of your plane, you could pop in and out of Moorabbin without a current ASIC and noone would know or care.

What is your mission in life Sunfish? To shut down the airport that you and many others enjoy flying from?

Peter - Sunny thinks more in the theory and hypothetical space than you, I and most others. He feels that if you are legally required to carry an ASIC then he must and if he doesn't have one because he forgot to renew it, then it must be the regulators fault for implementing such a stupid system where you need one in the first place.

You mean being accompanied by anyone at all that has an ASIC card... :ugh:

I sent off my renewal 2 weeks before the ASIC was due to expire, took them 4 weeks to send me a fresh one. I just walked around with the expired one for a while. What was I suppose to do?

Also I carry mine in my pocket with the prepared excuse of 'the clip broke earlier today'. I'm done with the stupid belt clip/lanyard snag point.

I've never been ASIC 'ramped' before. Kinda looking forward to the day it happens, just to see what makes the useless pigs tick.

My recollection is that you don't need to carry a current ASIC if there is an application for an ASIC in progress.

ASICs are an unnecessary expense and a pain in the butt. I can't see why they don't give them a five or even ten year expiry to reduce the costs of having to renew them. I can't imagine many pilots have an ASIC for two years without incident and then suddenly have an epiphany to become a religious extremist and terrorist.

I have flown in and out of SYD, MEL, ADL, CNS and PER for about 20 years now with no ASIC.

Never been asked about not having one, either.

Sunny, the mistake was to try to jump through all the hoops. In future, print yourself out a boarding card for an unscheduled private flight and wave that at them instead.

Mate of mine got done by the Feds, arrested and held for 6 hours as they checked all his credentials. Walked away with a $800 odd dollar fine for not displaying/having it on him

According to this, you can get away without one at YMMB.

ASIC Requirements at Moorabbin Airport


"It is a mandatory requirement to wear an ASIC pass at all times in all airside areas of Moorabbin Airport."

Note that some aviation sins cannot fairly be visited on CASA.

The Office of Transport Security in what is now the Department of Infrastructure and Transport created the ASIC monster. The lessees of Moorabbin seem to be among the many airport operators who prefer to discourage aviation.

Come on you guys.....just get with it. The world is a very different place than what is it was years ago. Security is important even though it is a pain in the arse. Trying to buck the system might seem smart but is it the right way to go?
