CAP 10's spotted in Boonah
 

A mate from YCAB was down at Boonah this week and spotted a couple of CAP 10's being given some TLC by Nigel Arnott.

I have never flown one, but what I am told these are awesome trainers and a delight to fly by those who have. The sort of thing you want for doing EMT and aero training perhaps?

Anyone know anything about them?

I have not seen any adverts for sale anywhere, but I bet they would be snapped up before they got to print.

Might be a good thing for Mrs and Jnr Jaba to train in?

Nice aeroplanes to fly in my opinion but I would never own one. "Awesome"? Nope.
A few discussion points:

• manufacturer out of business
• landing gear attached to wooden spar with some history of unseen cracks and subsequent catastrophic failure
• newer models have strengthened spars etc

My guess is that are surplus from RAAF flight screening.
Snapped up maybe if the price is low enough.

Just a chance your experience is out of date, these apparently have the new design wings (they have the spades on the ailerons) and new parts can be sourced from whoever holds the type certificate.

Not sure the issue is as bad as you remember.

Anyway...good things to learn from.

Yes, I admit to being out of date, I vaguely recall the local ones being modified with the C wings.

I flew both SUD and SZY (we called them quite obviously Sud and Suzy) during my cadetship in 91/92. They were a great trainer for both Tailwheel and aeros. Easy to fly, gentler on technique than the Super Decathlon which I'd done my initial Tailwheel endorsement on, and good power to weight for aeros.

The thing I liked most was the Spitfire like wing iron them. Always pretty.

My most enjoyable flight ever was doing 0.9 of aeros with 'Dog' Seager. Geez I was buggered after that.

They are indeed the ex BAe machines, lots of fun, I'd imagine.

Jaba, what does a CAP-10 do that an RV-8 can't? :p

Nothing and the -8 is faster :ok: I will have access to one in a year or so. :}

Quite a bit of stuff can be done by a certified aeroplane that can't be done by one in Experimental category.
