Air Transport Pilot Licence required when?

Could you please advise where in the rules it states when you need to have an ATPL.

When you're flying big motor planes n stuff.

But only if it's a commercial operation. I think it's leagally (if not practically) possible to fly an A380 as a private aircraft (your own)with a PPL, IR and other appropriate endorsements.

Thanks I am looking for a reference to where it is stated in which document

From my understanding you could fly an A380 with a PPL(A), just need multiengine and "multicrew" (or whatever that's called), and a check on the airctaft.

Then go fly VFR all day long below FL195.

ATPL is, to my understanding, only required if you are to be a captain. In Europe you can use the old CPL for right hand seat. Most new pilots have "frozen" ATPL's anyway.

The meaning of ATPL kinda says it all. Airline Transport Pilots License,
'Airline' is the key word here (as well as Capt)& if you do a Google search ATPL there's tons of info inc ref to Doc's etc.

In New Zealand you need an ATPL to be P in C of an aircraft where the flight manual requires two or more flight crew. It's in Part 61.

CAR 5.105 - What does a commercial pilot (aeroplane) licence authorise a person to do?

CAR 5.166 - What does an air transport pilot (aeroplane) licence authorise a person to do?

That's what I thought too, Wally, until I actually read what CASA printed on my license!
