TIGER DOWN ON BARWON HEADS BEACH
Just on the news, Tiger Moth from Tiger World Torquay suffered power loss and landed on beach, no injuries and no swimmers clobbered, Looked like VH DHK that my son flew there about 15 years ago.

Was this about 1 o'clock? Thought I heard something about landing on the beach but it was pretty garbled

From Sydney Morning Herald
Near miss for beachgoers as Tiger Moth makes forced landing at Barwon Heads Beach goers scrambled out of the path of a biplane that made an emergency landing at Barwon Heads in what onlookers say was a "very close call". A mechanical fault forced the Tiger Moth biplane to land on the sand at Thirteenth Beach shortly after 1.30pm on Monday. Witnesses say as many as 50 people were on the beach on the public holiday, and many began running and panicking as the aircraft descended. It was a near miss for Jeanne van Amerongen, 62, who was visiting from the Netherlands, and her young granddaughter Robin. She whisked Robin away "just in time", and the plane missed them by about a metre. Alex Keynes said others on the beach were screaming. "It was very lucky no one was hurt because there were a lot of people standing around," Mr Keynes said. The pilot and the sole passenger of the plane were not injured in the landing. Mr Keynes said the engine did not appear to be running as the plane lost altitude and landed on the beach, the biplane belongs to Tiger Moth World, an adventure-flight company based at Torquay Airport. Tiger Moth World manager Sandra Walsh said engineers would assess the problems with the aircraft before it was deemed safe to remove from the beach. "The aeroplane is fine, and the passenger is happy," she said. The Tiger Moth can "really glide" when it needs to land, she said. Australian Transport Safety Bureau spokesman Michael Squires said a mechanical fault was believed to be the cause of the emergency landing. He said authorities would gather more details of the incident before deciding if an investigation would be required. |
Spot on Chaza, Bruce McGarvie always said better to get your feet wet than killing a dozen Gold Coast tourists by attempting a beach landing???

Treating the iCom like an iPhone, brilliant...aaannnndddd, stolen!

The reality is that when you are flying along a beach at 500ft AGL you don't get to find many places to land when the fan stops.

Close to a record!
Only 4 posts, then the speculation starts! |
This bloke already thought he was a god of flying with a tiger endo and a grade 3 instructor rating. Can't wait to see what a successful flwop does to his ego.
|
I'm surprised there's not more issues down there ..
Good job on the young fella getting it down safe tho. Let him have his 5 minutes. A lot of Luck and a some skill go a long way. |
The Tiger is down in one piece and nobody is hurt.
The jealous personal attacks on the Pilot aren't helpful. :D |
How do you get to make those comments after 2 posts? The 7 aliases I created after my last ban are still on probation after 4 posts :ugh:

a mild sharing of critical views round topics like this should not get posters backs up or cause mods to suck teeth
if the chappy is a bit of a FIGJAM then let's not be too precious about saying as much. Especially if he has come across as such face to face, as reported above. he might even call in here. or be directed here, and eventually feel a little chastened. (if there had been a death on the beach. if it could be shown that he chose the beach when he could have taken the golf course. then he'd be scratching for the best legal eagle within his price range. ) |
Now, now Fantome. Some very precious people here who've forgotten how to laugh lurk here

you said it jack . it is many moons since killen and minjoy thought to register killjoy aviation. (they were two men deeply conscientiously and effectively prospering GA in Australia and beyond, but knew that opposing gravity you needed a modicum of levity.)
one day i'll post a priceless pic of goya henry flying along in his biplane 'jolly roger' with his arm raised high and pressed against his palm by the slipstream a flask of red mill rum where have all the jokers gone . . long time passing a p prune search of chris braund throws up some tales of one of the drollest men ever to take to OZ skies . (that is search chris braund. . not chris braund throws up) eg . . . chris had a fairly pronounced stammer. his trademark in a sense . scene was the wagga rsl one 5 pm . .. .. . crowded bar with chris trying to get to his pot. "j.j.j.j.ust let me th. th. through here p.p.lease. " then stretching out an arm .. . "see. n.n.no impediment in m.m.my reach" |
Yo Fantome...........that got the best belly laugh in years.
Chris Braund: what a champ:D |

Only worth it for reader comment number 1. |
They are so lucky to not have killed anyone yet, ***** ***** is a loose cannon of a ***** *****
I would put good money on the 'cause' of the engine failure being fuel starvation when they routinely run on minimums and have admitted that more than once has one of their skydive planes been deadsticked back onto the field. Also... Picture this: Short field landing demo. Not his aircraft. "Breaks are for emergencies only. Hold on the back pressure." *tail strike on rollout* "Don't worry about it, it's only grass." Edited: no names please |
"Breaks" (?)
You mean like "smoko"? :E |
I've heard a million stories about said CP, and I wouldn't send my worst enemy to work for him...
