CASA crows about Social media

The following from the current casa September missive crows about how it is using social media.

I am sorry, but this is "..them telling us....", not co-operating with an important industry in the basic infrastructure of Australia.

This is "..we know best.."

A series of current issues tell us that that simply is not the case.

For you to whom social media is a two way process, read this [If you are a t.w.i.t.t.e.r user, remember casa "FOLLOWS" Nil, zero, zip, 0 - You tell me.

THE MISSIVE in PART:

September 2013
From the Director of Aviation Safety
John McCormick

While CASA was not an early adopter of social media I am pleased to see many people are now obtaining safety and other information from us via You Tube and Twitter. When I checked recently CASA's videos on You Tube had attracted nearly 21,500 views in total. On Twitter we now have more than 2000 followers, with that number growing steadily all the time. While this newsletter does not fall under the category of social media, it has more than 13,000 subscribers, and when each new issue of Flight Safety Australia is uploaded an email alert goes more than 60,000 subscribers. CASA also has 20 email services that send information on specific topics to tens of thousands of people.

These cover aircraft registration, regulatory development, flying training, airworthiness and much more. This all adds up to a lot of people getting a lot of information on a regular basis about aviation safety and safety regulation. On Twitter we are posting tweets on most workings days covering a diverse range of subjects from the most recent airworthiness bulletins to the latest job vacancies. CASA's You Tube channel features 44 videos, with the library expanding as new productions come on line. The operations at non-towered aerodromes video has so far been viewed more than 1500 times and heads the list as the most popular. Other popular videos with more than 1000 views are the powerful 178 seconds to live, passenger briefing and situational awareness.

The strategy behind CASA's various social media and other communication tools is to offer people in the aviation industry and the travelling public a range of timely options to get the information they need. Flight Safety Australia provides in-depth coverage and analysis every two months of key safety issues, aimed primarily at people working and operating in aviation. It is essential reading for everyone who needs to understand and continue to learn about aviation safety. This newsletter – the CASA Briefing – gives a snapshot every month of what is happening in safety and safety regulation. Emails give you information on specific topics and issues of direct interest. Twitter is our daily feed for people who want their information quickly and succinctly, with links back to the CASA web site for the details. And completing the information package is YouTube - providing the visual messages to make understanding important safety issues that much easier.

I urge everyone to think about how they want to get their information from CASA, making sure you choose the tools that suit you. Subscribe to Flight Safety Australia, the CASA Briefing or email services, follow us on Twitter and watch us on YouTube. If you would like to see CASA using other social media or communication tools please tell us by sending feedback through this newsletter, tweeting or using the Director's feedback form on our web site. I thank everyone for their interest in news and information from CASA.

fascinating that the pprooone spell chequer changed t.w.i.t.t.e.r. to pprune even in the quotes.

djpil 27th Sep 2013 03:34

I had some email correspondence with him a while back where I stated that the USA FAA was active on Facebook and that I knew many aviators who used Facebook. Can't think of one sensible person who twits.

T28D 27th Sep 2013 05:02

All good until the tide of opinion runs against them as it inevitably will, how then will they handle a viral attack ???????

Jack Ranga 27th Sep 2013 05:50

So true T28D, I've seen it happen. It will be a major embarrassment for them when it DOES happen.

How effective is casa in social media

To demonstrate this, this thread, which was started at 11:40 today has head 552 views of a new thread in just four hours [this one!!]

The skull boasts of 2000 followers on t.w.i.t.t.e.r but this is less that 1 in 9 of the current pilot population!!!

The skull's newsletter 13,000 subscribers, which is not much over half of the current pilot population!!!

Flight Safety Australia has 60,000 subscribers and as we know is slow to upload, difficult to read and the 60,000 does not tell us how many go from the link [which is all that is provided] to actually downloading the actual "publication" [difficult to read on the "loo"] anyway in it's current form, slow to download and olnly gives out what skull want's us to "know" anyway!!

The direction from the skull's newsletter is:

Subscribe to Flight Safety Australia, the CASA Briefing or email services, follow us on Twitter and watch us on YouTube.

Nowhere does it say "We would appreciate your inputs and we will integrate them into what we are doing and we will communicate back with you..."

dubbleyew eight 27th Sep 2013 07:08

the answer is obvious.
if they hang on the audience numbers then everyone give them a total miss for a year or two.
you won't notice any difference really and your frustration levels will drop.

halfmanhalfbiscuit 27th Sep 2013 07:42

Casa should set up a pprune account and discuss on some of the more popular threads. Such as regulatory reform or senate inquiry. They could use opportunity to attract followers.

Maybe even employ one of the 'ills of society' as they seem to know how to work pprune and social media.

Wally Mk2 27th Sep 2013 08:19

"1/2" what makes you think they haven't already been masquerading in here amongst the rest of us Prruners?
Social media for all it's faults could be used to great effect in the +, yet to see it but we all are here waiting!

halfmanhalfbiscuit 27th Sep 2013 08:45

Yes, agree. Ff was probably one ?

If they came into this environment and put their side of argument they could get followers on twit and twitterer.

A nice on line debate. Although I think pprune could be seen as a thorn in their side. So come on casa open a pprune account and engage in discussion.

Hempy 27th Sep 2013 09:34

Mates 10 year old daughter does better than that with her Littlest Petshop videos.

Ultralights 27th Sep 2013 09:51

i cant believe CASA even have an internet presence at all, I mean, the last 2 CPL exam attemps were cancelled due to their system being down, for more than a day.. and their exam system does not operate on weekends! WTF? im pretty sure the meerkat add on TV with the old meerkat at the computer manually answering questions is actually the CASA IT department...:rolleyes:

004wercras 27th Sep 2013 10:25

Well I'm your huckleberry

Hi there biscuit, I'm CAsA, I'm already here!!
What robust topic shall we discuss?
Or would you like to chat with my other CAsA friend who is masquerading in here also - Flyingfiend?

halfmanhalfbiscuit 27th Sep 2013 10:59

Hi 004, there will now be a witch hunt to identify whom you are in CAsA. An Ios in the inner sanctum of Bris or Canberra! Also a non believer in Sky sentinnel as a risk based success story. (umm didn't another group bring in risk based a few years back and got pineappled)

I was thinking more of the management getting involved in robust discussions and winning over ppruners to follow them on twitter. (i wrote t.w.i.t.t.e.r)

All those nice glossy videos on you tube with only a couple of hundred views a piece.

thorn bird 27th Sep 2013 11:18

"If they came into this environment and put their side of argument they could get followers on twit and twitterer."

They have no argument, they are CORRUPT!!!!!!!

004wercras 27th Sep 2013 11:19

Hi biscuit, indeed our glossy videos aren't as popular as expected!
Not sure why, but I believe it's got something to do with a lack of tits, the video's are full of crusty old desk jockeys instead. As a Regulator we take safety seriously and you won't find smutty innuendo, pigs mating or any twerking in our clips. 'Safety is not a game'.
However we are considering filming 'CAsA Big Brother', in which the Brisbane basement is converted into a house and is filled with CAsA managers, some FOI's and some IOS. They will compete for prizes, a seat at the trough, acquittal of NCN's and even approval of a SMS. This should bring in the viewers we believe. And although there will not be nudity, all contestants shall wear reflective vests, wear an ASIC and where applicable carry their log book. Throw into the mix the occasional operational surveillance and turd massage and you have prime time viewing :ok:
It has been rumoured that a DAS will be brought in to really shake up the house, along with an independent Senator, so it should be fun.

Disclaimer: All television footage shall be processed, filtered and edited through SkySentinel. All pot plants in the house have been donated from the staff at Furzer Street and no worm farm occupants will be harmed during filming.

Frank Arouet 27th Sep 2013 11:42

I found a new word!

Circa Piers Akerman blog of most recent;

But there is a huge difference in providing essential public information and pushing out self-aggrandising rubbish designed to provide anti-social media fodder for the benefit of the Left-aligned Canberra Press Gallery’s self-absorbed twitterati.
"TWITTERATI".

Has a good ring about it I thought. Rhymes with "****".

Ejector 27th Sep 2013 13:49

While CASA was not an early adopter of social media I am pleased to see many people are now obtaining safety and other information from us via You Tube and PPRuNe.

Whats their handle here?

LeadSled 27th Sep 2013 15:25

Folks,
If CASA actually are serious about the twitterverse being a source of aviation regulatory or operational information, we are in more trouble than even I thought.
What's the limit on twitter, 140 characters?? CASA really are a bunch of twits, if they think twitter is a suitable format for dissemination of any, let alone critical, information.
Tootle pip!!

Shagpile 28th Sep 2013 23:55

Edit: WTF I see now prune auto changes t.w.i.t.t.e.r with pprune. That kind of thing will turn me away from here.

I'm going to jump in here and say that CASA's use of social media works for me.

For anybody not on t.witter, don't bag it before actually trying it. You'll find that Facebook is actually massively in decline and t.witter is booming.

The idea with t.witter is simple. You follow people/organisations you are interested in. I follow amongst other things, CASA, Ben Sandilands, Crikey, PlaneCrazyDownUnder, a couple of stock market commentators and about 3 friends who don't post dribble.

An example of a CASA post would be: "Safety seminars in x,y,z next week. Tap this link for more details [link]".

I would tap and "retweet" that link so my followers, presumably interested in aviation, would see it. If I retweet or post too much fluff, they will unfollow me.

I don't think there could be a better way for CASA to engage me unobtrusively - the entire point of t.witter is you need to get your message and link into 140chars. It cuts down a lot of fluff. I normally delete their emails as they are too long to read.
