Abdominal History

Hi there.

I'm trying to find out if there are any pilots that have held a class 1 medical after having part or all of their large intestine removed due illness.

I believe that there a two-step procedure called a "j-pouch" which is available after having part or all of intestine removed. Essentially this reconnects the small intestine to the exit valve.

I can't find out anywhere as to whether or not one can be re-certified with Class 1 after having it done and interested to hear if anyone knows someone flying who has had it done.

Cheers and Beers

I know of one person who has been through similar surgery(s). He did get his Class 1 back, but I'm unsure whether he still holds one. You might consider posting this in the Fragrant Harbour forum, as he has been up there for several years. Don't know if he has the time (or inclination) to read pprune though :E

Good luck.

i know a bloke well whose been through what you describe.

all the large intestine gone now after 3 ops. temporary colostomy bag while the plumbing healed.

things took a while to settle down but he got his nz class 2 back no worries. good luck i know it'll be a bit of a life change.

just re read my reply. for the avoidance of doubt, my mate never had his class 1.

Don't rely on this forum or other peoples experience etc, get your specialist Doctor to speak directly to CASA Medical to determine your present or future position. It is all about you. Good luck and have patience ...

Yes my old cp had crones disease and had a poo bag. He was stood down for 12 months and then got his class 1 back. It did not really stop him doing much. Unfortunately he is no longer with us as he would of been happy to talk to you about his exPerience I'm sure.

I know of one who is now flying RPT jets in AU as an effo, and a previous regional Captain.
