Power Point for Instructors
 

Hi everyone, Just wondering if anyone knows where I can get some good notes to teach PPL Theory and above in a powerpoint presentation or any good books even to teach the subjects.

PowerPoint is now so last decade.

If you have a Mac, an iPad and a projector (or HD TV) a good option for you might be pulling up content in iBooks... a search in iTunes will take a while for PPL, but there is some great stuff out there now for EASA CPL & ATPL... for example PadPilot for ATPL, which is easy to find, and it will not take much to edit in iBooks Author to match the CASA syllabus ... just remember what you produce in iBooks Author is in the public domain.

You then take this content and set up your classroom with a Mac, a projector or HD TV, iPads and a wifi network. Link it together using something like the Splashtop 2 App. Plus you can deliver remotely to anyone with a decent 3G connection and an iPad.

The whole thing will be easier to set-up than building a half decent PowerPoint presentation, but will be light years ahead as a learning tool.

Unfortunately there are currently no PC based equivalents... the sweetness of this set-up is worth the hassles of dealing with Apple. And everyday there is more and more content in the iBook store.

Gotta put it out there - I f-ing hate PowerPoint. Both as delivering and receiving information. I think one day it will be seen as the most ineffective tool of training in human history.

I agree. It is another teaching tool to have in the instructors tool kit. But never lose the skill of chalk and talk. CASA FOI's prefer it.

Some of the presentations I've seen, people have put far too much crap and crappy backgrounds on each slide. Plenty of youtube tutorials out there on how to make it work.

Agree with previous posts. So last decade and you still need those chalk and talk skills.

It's a nice starting point for you to create your own resources if you're doing an initial flight instructor rating course.

I also donwloaded something similar from the FAA website called the FAA Flight Instructor Handbook when I did my initial flight instructor rating but it seems like it's no longer available, unless the FAA now calls it something else. It had some nice diagrams which I copied and paste in to my PowerPoint presentations.

As for whether the PowerPoint is last decade technology or not, well, for me, it's just one amongst many resources you can use in the class room to get your point across to the students during briefs and de-briefs. The whiteboard and whiteboard markers are still a valid resource and so too is a small model aircraft of a Cessna 172 or Piper whatever. Also useful is a cutout of the 'forward view out the window' to show the students the differences in pitch attitudes during climb, cruise and descent. Yep, call me old fashion. lol..

Some good stuff here for the flying sequences.

The NZ is much better. The CASA stuff is typical, just a bunch of words without anything useful to help to prepare a briefing. The kiwi stuff makes my 25 year old overheads look like Neanderthal rock art! Well done NZ!:ok:
