Info on Air NZ jet fleet recruitment
 

Hi all,

Air NZ's careers website mentions that they are recruiting for their jet fleet as well as for the regional airlines. If anyone have any information on this that I won't have already read on their website that would be greatly appreciated.

Things like:
- how many pilots they're thinking of taking for the jet fleet;
- whether these pilots are just going to be internal applicants or whether they will consider external applicants as well;
- when they are looking to bring these pilots onto the line;
- what aircraft they are looking to recruit onto.

As a Kiwi having been offshore for over 35 years and observing the shenanigans that we all know go on, relatively new joiners to my current company..less than 10 years.. have applied and been accepted by ANZ (all Kiwis, generally ex NZ G.A. or Air Force). These lads (nothing against the Ladies but as yet to my knowledge none have applied) have around 5 - 10 years 747/777/330/340 FO time and ANZ seem to be falling over themselves to employ them. Good on them. My current employer seems to think experience means nothing but high cost and is happy to see them go as their annual increments cost management additional bonuses and after all, they can employee non pilots, train them from scratch and they'll be excellent Captains in just a few years. Oh yea?? Watch this space. Upgrade time from Cadet to JFO to FO already doubled, Commands slowed as no FOs to crew flights. Even with the current slow down flights are being cancelled due lack of crew. With only a short time to retirement I'm watching with amusement and take my hat off to ANZ management who are currently taking the experienced folk from those carriers who think they can treat their new hires like absolute rubbish.

Maybe the first slots should go to Ansett's 900 pilots that they made redundant.....first right of return?

Isn't the time to upgrade into the left hand seat one of the longest in the world ? I've heard 15-20 years. Worth thinking about for the older applicants.

15 -20 years for an A320 Left seat is about right at the moment. 20-25 years for a widebody. This has all been done before in another thread, but for the newbies, go in with your eyes open! A great job in some respects, and a terrible one in others. Assuming these 787's stop spontaneously combusting and actually turn up next year, and retirements kick off then it could be a good time to get in. Rumour has it that 400 pilots hit 65 in the next ten years. Despite the odd one hanging on into their dotage, the average retirement age is still 65 so barring another SARS/9-11/swine flu etc, things should start to speed up.

That said, make sure you apply for the right reasons. If you want a quick command (or even FO) then go to Jetstar.

I do wonder sometimes about these birds Flus, SARS, swine flus etc. How much of it is scaremongering and hype? In some cases designed to bolster sale of immunisation medications.

How many people actually die?

The whole bird flu thing is crap, over the past 5 years there have been approx. 350 worldwide deaths attributed to bird flu. Compare this to the estimated 3 - 500,000 who die from standard influenza EVERY year worldwide and I think there is an element of scaremongering here.
