Why is Internal Aussie Prices so high even with Competition?
 

Looking to find some relatively cheap fares ex Perth to Melbourne.

I cannot believe that the costs for during early March 13 are around 250 dollars each way with any carrier.

I dont want passes etc just a flight.....wish EasyJet had a go at the Aussie market!!:ugh:

Let's see, how much would it cost you to drive the 3400km (40 odd hours) it would take you to get there? I'm guessing you expect the flight to cost about the same as your taxi ride to the airport?! :ugh:

Missed the point - can do same distance in europe over land and sea - would take ages as example to go from UK to Cyprus by land and boat...5 hours by air - cost 200 UK Pounds return...do the math!

That's a simple one to explain. Everyone who has scrounged enough money to get out of Greece is doing so, which leaves plenty of empty seats on inbound flights.

You'd find that Easyjet would have to charge around the same as the others due to may factors such as cost of living and doing business in Australia (factor in importing most things and paying for aircraft maint vittles in USD etc) from being so far away from "the action" of the US and EU down here. So, when exchange rate (currently at AUD1.51:1BPS and everything factored in it costs AUD$200 more for the whole trip or, should you prefer to factor the actual CPI's of the two countries (1.22 for Australia and currently 100.13 for the UK - look it up yourself: Cost of living index by Country ) you'll find that in real terms you're paying around AUD35 bucks each way (20 quid) more for a seat on a three quarters full aircraft because maybe, just maybe the load factors may not always be what they are in Europe due something so trivial as population base... We do pay a little extra for our fresh air and wide open spaces, high wages and equally high taxation. :ok:

You do the math and have yourself a really lovely day. We'd like to see you down here really soon but please leave that "apparent" chip on your shoulder back there and arrive with an open mind.

I remember flying Canberra to Perth every year back in the 80's during the Christmas Holidays.

The cost of an Apex fare around $1200. Compassionate fares were not much cheaper. I remember flying Darwin to Perth on a compassionate fare for $1500 in the mid 90's!

I flew Ryanair Stansted to Rome, Rome to Glasgow and finally Glasgow to Stansted. These were the 3 worst flights of my life.. The first sector cost £19, the second £25 and the last £27. I would pay £200 for each to never have to fly Ryanair ever again.

The arrival of Virgin and now jetstar/tiger has ensured current airfares have never been cheaper..

$500 return sounds like a bargain..

Where abouts are you looking and what dates? Sounds like you have picked a peak flight or one surrounding an event. Tiger has fares every day for most of March for $99. Jetstar will beat it by 10% if departs within and hour of their's.

Are you serious mate? Apart from some isolated periods airfares haven't been cheaper. That's with a sturdy economy as well.

Apart from what has already bin said here re cost of doing business in OZ etc one of our biggest problems in Oz is that the Airlines are their worst own enemies.They have undercut each other so much that it's getting very difficult to make a buck for the outcome laid & IMHO it's not sustainable.

Big land theory also with not many people about,Oz simply doesn't have the masses & therefore like our pathetic road infrastructure aviation & it's associated costs are spread over but a few.

Tiger charges the same amount around that period as EasyJet does to London to Moscow. (which is a few hundred nm less)
