iPad Mini mounting options/availability in Australia
 

I've been given an iPad mini and can see how it can be a useful adjunct in the cockpit of a lighty. I've been looking to mount it perhaps on the glareshield or even yoke a la the RAM mount systems or similar but I seem a bit stumped in finding a local supplier that has a mountable case that can be coupled with RAM mount or other accessories.

How are others mounting iPad Minis (besides kneeboards + velcro!) - and where are you getting your hardware from ? Anything local - or is it another foray into the Sporty's site?

Very good RAM mounts and suction equipment. Never had one fail, even up to a cabin altitude of 11,000.

But, chances are you cant use it. It's not just the CAAP which discusses the use of this sort of thing, have a look at the new additions to CAO 82. Personally, I think CASA are full of horsesh1t.

We know nothing about notimtams. We dont know if its commercial or private ops or even the type of plane other than it is "light". For all we know it could be something on the RA register so CAO82 may have no bearing whatsoever..

The CAAP just happened to mention the airworthiness regs wrt modifications to aircraft which apply to RAA as well (except Experimental ... ).

Had a play around today - it works very well when inside an A5 plastic sleeve. Touches work excellent.

No, simply arming the gentleman with all of the appropriate CASA anti-ipad propaganda. Wouldn't have a clue what sort of op he flies, but if it is GA now he know where to research apart from the CAAP. I'd bet there is a decent % of commercial pilots who don't know CAO 82 was updated to include EFBs.

Also most standard clip boards you should be able to make work. Glue on non-slip rubber backing, use rubber bands, etc.

Having used a suck-mount, I prefer a knee board.

mount:
- Easily viewed while keeping an eye outside
- Pain to use in turbulence as your arm flies up and down.

Knee:
- Need to look down occasionally to track progress.
- Easy to use in turbulence; just grab it with thumb and little finger and use other fingers to touch screen.

BTW - I never said anything about using it as an EFB nor for use flying under an AOC, I just enquired as to the Australian availability of mounting options.

It is interesting that CASA chooses to use (?abuse) the intent of CASR 1998 21M to limit the temporary fixing of lightweight portable equipment, apparently even in private operations. There are thousands of aircraft flying out there with a varying assemblage of GPS on yoke mounts, glareshield mounts, windscreen bow mounts, suction mounts and these GPS vary in weight from GPS III Pilot (255g), to GPSMAP 196 (680g) to GPS 696 (1012g). Forky and Jaba would be good examples of multiple GPS users....An iPad Mini weighs 312g and an iPad2 weighs 613g. I do not recall any previous push by CASA to use CASR 1998 21M to scare these units into stowage and the push to do so now to differentiate EFB from GPS units in commonly accepted use makes no sense on the basis of mass.....

BTW at my last CIR renewal, the testing officer complemented me on the combined approach plate clipboard/GPS III pilot yoke mount I had.......so I can't logically see them wetting their pants at an iPad mini on the yoke, whatever its use.

On two separate occasions, I have actually had FOI's mention the concept that adding any weight to the control system (regardless of whether it's an EFB, GPS or whatever) requires an EO.

Never met anyone who's been pinged for it yet though.

I have a wallee for my Ipad and they make a comparable case for the mini.

Use common sense, tell the whackers where to go.

At times even CASA amaze themselves. If challenged ask for proof. Show a safety case. Or jam it somewhere not certified to fit!
