Watches

Currently in the market for a new one

What are people using that's good?

Would prefer one that displays UTC and local at the same time

Omega Seamaster GMT :)

Bought one of these a while ago and for the price, can't fault it. Has a backlight for night ops.

Can't go past a Doxa :)

DOXA the SUB 4000T

Shagpile 5th Dec 2012 08:26

g-shock. Lots of varieties, relatively cheap & displays UTC time + local time + date and day. I like functional, not "classy". I find the expensive ones stupid. These also do Adelaide time zone, many don't.

You can't go past this one. http://lh5.googleusercontent.com/pub...rESceIg=s220-c It does not have dual timezone though!

My mate's son wanted a watch for his birthday, so he let him.

I have a Citizen Skyhawk, bought as a grad present from my family. Great watch, titanium and dual zone plus the "slide rule bezel" (which I never use), super light and looks great without being over sized and wanky. However, its major down fall is it wont do half zones, aka central time which is a gripe seeing as I fly in the NT.

So if your east or west coast only and want something "piloty" its a good buy, however my next watch will be a dual time G-Shock that does half zones!:ok:

it wont do half zones

Does that mean that if you are regularly in and out of India, you have to re set? That's a big market to ignore.

I'd go for the Ulysse Nardin Tellurium Johannes Kepler watch:

The flexible bar spring rotates around the map in the middle, bending with the time of year, and indicates time of sunset, sunrise and area of daylight (in the Northern Hemisphere - the map is the Earth seen from above the north pole.)

The lunar symbol displays the phase and position of the moon. The dragon head and tail indicate eclipses of the sun and moon, respectively. The perpetual calendar ring rotates to display the date, month and current zodiac sign below the "12 o'clock" position. Completely mechanical and self winding (UN-87 workings) and it's water resistant to 30 meters :)

Yours for just $120,000 :ok:

Promaster

G'day Spyder,

There is a work-around on the Promaster - you can re- align the hands (procedure in the manual) and use that function to re-align the hands 30 minutes out of whack to the digital display. I have my digital display on UTC and the Analog presentation on local time.

...and I use the slide rule all the time cos its quicker than pulling out my phone and trying to open the calculator :8

MakeItHappenCaptain 5th Dec 2012 15:31

Same same,

The bezel works well for exchange rates too.:ok:

Yeah, I got one of those Ulysse Nardin watches but it was too big for my girly wrist so I cut the band off and stuck to the panel of my 150 with blu-tac... Looks ok I guess... :8

RENURPP 5th Dec 2012 19:48

It's very important you buy a really really BIG one, and if at all possible it should have the word "Pilot" on it!

Sunfish 5th Dec 2012 20:25

Big, with lots of buttons........

I have one of these. Looks sort of manly watchy and is a phenomenal timekeeper.

I also have one of these. Looks smart contempory - I bought it in Gib in 1970 - but is not now such a good timekeeper.

Old Akro 5th Dec 2012 22:03

These days you don't need the slide rule thing. Personally, I use the phone for day / date. I use the phone for alarm too. I don't use it as a stopwatch (the ADF or aircraft chronometer or iPhone will do that). That leaves the only thing for a watch to do is tell the time.

I do still like the forth GMT hand. So, I have a Wenger (Swiss Army) one that looks nice and a Luminox for my everyday one. The Luminox has baby LED's on the hands and all hour points, so its excellent at night. There are very few GMT watches.

I'd just get the one you like that's easy to read.

The Omega distributors (Something with swiss watch in the name. In Waverly Rd near Burke Rd) do a really good job of refreshing old watches.

RedhillPhil 5th Dec 2012 22:10

Hmm, might be worth a punt. If only to stop it gaining about thirty seconds a day!

All times are GMT. The time now is 02:28.
