High Altitude Vapour Trails over Melbourne
This afternoon 9 October around 15:32 AEDST there was a very fast aircraft at high altitude over Melbourne Eastern suburbs heading approx ESE.
Traversed approx 90degrees of arc in around 15 seconds. Anyone know what it was? Is there a website somewhere where similar sightings can be identified? |
Chemtrails. There's an election coming up.
|
Usain Bolt going home maybe?
|
As you imply there was a vapor trail so it can't be the ISS, but by coincidence, the ISS was exactly 20 km due south of Wilson's Prom 8 mins later at 15:40:53 :8
Just at that point, it was 439.37 km up and dawdling along at 27509.63 km/h |
It's just a US drone matey, do not worry, it is there to protect you :ok:
|
...Is there a website somewhere where similar sightings can be identified?... Alien-UFOs.com - Aliens & UFOs - News, Sightings, Videos, Pictures . |
I should have known better than to ask I suppose.

Martians..... on their way to get a better view of Venus...
|
Don't you mean a better view of urANUS? :}
|
Swamp gas from a weather balloon reflecting off of Venus.....????:E

I just had a look on WebTrak | Airservices
and dialled up the appropriate date and time but could not see anything there that fits your description.I'm not saying it wasn't there, just that it doesn't seem to have been recorded. |
Webtrack is a noise tracking website, so it doesn't track anything above a certain altitude.
|
Not taking the piss here, but a meteor in daylight may may look similar to that.
Otherwise there have been plenty of military aircraft that have used our airspace, I believe the U2's used to fly around OZ and rumor has it they used have to get clearance to descend back in to class A :E |
Guys, sure there are UAVs and other secret squirrel stuff in our airspace, but you would be surprised how high an F/A-18 can fly. Also, vapour trails only occur at a certain altitude/temp range, and disappear as you go higher. Being relatively small, a Hornet at around 25,000 feet will probably look, from the ground, like a high altitude aircraft leaving a thin trail.

I did find an interesting site that shows radar tracks for SE QLD Flight Data for South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales but it seems to be a one-off enthusiast DIY endeavour. |
Planefinder (Plane Finder ? Flight Radar | Aircraft Tracker | Live Flight Tracking) web site can often help.
I have seen similar contrail, and looked it up - it was Emirates Singapore to Auckland, direct flight. John |
Well done rjtjrt - that Plane Finder site is a good get, but it doesn't show the object of my interest.
Given the likely speed involved it must have been something military and perhaps relatively stealthy. I'm obviously wrong about the time - maybe it was 30 or 40 seconds to traverse 90 degrees. So it was possibly something to do with this: US Navy EA-18G Growler visit - Royal Australian Air Force - I wonder if one popped down to East Sale yesterday? |
This guy has you covered:

Love the bongos. What's his point though?

Air New Zealand operates between Perth and NZ.
