"PLANS have been lodged today with Toowoomba Regional Council for a large, jet-capable airport on the city's outskirts.
The proposed airport will be located at Wellcamp, west of Toowoomba within the Wellcamp Charlton Enterprise Area, and will be open to commercial planes and the general public.

Major Toowoomba company Wagners is the project's sole proponent.

Interesting. I wonder why they felt this was a more viable option than negotiating with Defence to use Oakey, whose ILS-equipped 14/32 would require considerably less expense to modify to suit?

Defence Oakey would like to see all civil aircraft totally banned from their facility - their not going to negotiate

Wagners do have considerable quarrying interests, so no shortage of real estate or materials.

Not every day someone comes along wanting to build an airport, so that is unique in itself! :ok:

Wagners have tried and tried to get Toowoomba airport sorted 4 years ago but at the end of the day the airport is built in with housing, Skytrans just get in and out..... end of story......:ugh:

About 2 to 3 years ago, Wagners led the way with the city bypass for the transporters and commuters, a "pilot hole" has been established but can not get the Government support/funding to go and open it up..:ugh:

Now...good on the Wagners in opening/constructing their own strip on their own land....They will not get a 737 in there "due to the expense" and the black soil out there (Gov. will never invest on the wagners land), however they can get the GA guys/girls flying in there when TWB is fogged in etc. Forget about the RPT side of things as Oakey and Amberley are just tolerating a local RPT organisation in Toowoomba.

There has been some effort to drag into 1990's(Tongue in Cheek). But I do know of one Council Rep working as an Airfield Safety Officer at Toowoomba that does everything in his power to help and work in with the airfield operators. Even better that he is a major aviation enthusiast.

That's fantastic. I wish more people in Australia had this entrepreneurial drive and foresight.

A facility such as this has, particularly in the longer term, the very real potential to make this region desirable as a point of export (and import) where otherwise this may not have been viable. This has significant upside for the prosperity of the entire Toowoomba basin and indeed western Brisbane and all south east Qld.

Are these the same types of "iindependant reports" that provided the forecast numbers for Brisbane's bankrupt tunnels?

The forecast numbers would rather sit in traffic than pay a toll.

Which I can never understand.

If you placed a value on your time, plus the extra fuel, then you'd soon discover using the tunnel's is cheaper!

In the meantime, I'll enjoy empty tunnels for quick travel time, :ok:.

Wagner's facility looks pretty flash though. Hopefully it's a success for them. Last thing we want is for a big stretch of nice runway to lay dormant. Things like this is what aviation in this country need's.

I'm at a loss to understand how a crowd like Wagners could spend so much on a very large private airport, and yet only have one runway? Does the wind only blow in one direction in Toowoomba??

The whole exercise seems like a loss-making exercise to me, unless Wagners already have agreements in place with "Anchor Businesses" who have agreed to set up their operations there, or make substantial use of their facilities.

There's a lot of noise about how Toowoomba could become the biggest business/air operations/freighting centre outside Brisbane. It's going to take a lot more than just a new private airport to do that.
Air freighting is not exactly a winner at present, and much produce and freight still has to find its way to and from Brisbane.
I hope Wagners have deep pockets and a solid business plan to fund any losses from the airport operation for quite a few years.

From a jet ops perspective, Cooly, Sunshine Coast, Cairns, Townsville, Alice, Ayers Rock, Kalgoorlie, Karratha, Paraburdoo, Newman, etc. etc. all seem to cope well with only one runway.

Canberra with its dozens of jet movements a day is also a single runway airport, as far as the RPT operators are concerned.

I see Dash 8's, J41's, J32's, Metros, the odd Saab etc all using RWY 30 from time to time, but they mustn't be conducting RPT is that right?

Amongst other things, i imagine the property they had and further land availability close to Toowoomba city, and terrain, dictated the outcome.
The strip runs along a shallow valley floor and the airport is next to the Toowoomba ring road.

Of interest, there is quiet a bit of work being done around Toowoomba airport. Don't think the council would be spending the money unless they seen a future for YTWB.

Isn't over a dozen >5700kg turboprop movements on RWY30 a day enough for you, or do you just argue and throw false claims into a discussion just for the fun of it?

When I used to operate Metros and Jetstreams in and out of there at all hours of the day and night RWY30 was offered around 50% of the time. It still is, but I know that doesn't suit your reality.... Besides, YOU stated "RPT" without qualifying your statement.

Now, back to Wagners. Good on them for getting this off the ground!

And you can add RK, MK, CH,MA,AY and about a dozen mining airports that cope with a single runway for RPT jet ops or FIFO jet ops.

Not much here that will worry RPT ops.. maybe some thunderstorms in spring & summer and occasional fog in winter.
