Cobham looking for Dash 8 FO's

I see Cobham have advertised for FO's for Darwin and Broome. Im just wondering if anyone has any inside info on what they are like to work for? How many hours you fly? what the rostering is like? etc. They seem to advertise a bit so I was wondering if they have a shortage of applicants or quick turn over of pilots?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Yes, have also wondered about the regular advertising. It seems like an ok deal at face value.

I would presume being short on night hours would be a major stumbling block to being accepted?

If anyone is keen to advise on this, I also would be grateful.

Great company to work for, good experience and good money for aircraft type. Regarding the comment about the coast watch exam, it's nothing a little study won't fix!!!

I understand that they used to take kiwi pilots on as well but this seems to have changed... Any one know whether kiwis are eligible for the security clearance or an equivalent??

PM on any other details would be wonderful too :ok:

Cheers,

I've eyeballed this position for a long time now. Unfortunately I have nobody with any inside info about the special mission day-to-day operations etc. any info via PM would have me shouting the first round at the local!

Pay is up there with QLink - perhaps better in some cases.

Training is good and on a popular type. Expect to be bonded; no need to pay up front!

Bases are Broome, Darwin and Cairns. Primarily Broome is the focus of recruiting. Plenty of C206 jobs in Broome....know which one I'd fancy.

Rosters aren't that heavy.

I was told that pilots can be sent to another base for week/s at a time on very short notice. Can anyone advise if that is true? Pretty hard on family if it is true.

Not sure what weeks away means.

RDO can only be taken at "home" so you have to return to your domicile at some stage unless you elect to take them down route.

That said they do some long deployments from time to time.

Where they are recruiting for, BME & DRW (?) tend not to do these long away trips. Mainly CNS!

When away you receive overnight allowance - not sure what it is but I think it is approx $100/night tax free. From that you feed yourself so up to you how much you save or otherwise!

From the AFAP website an FO is on a 50k training wage and around 66k year 1 with allowances on top.

I'd say you'd end up around the 70-75k region year 1. Perhaps pushing 80k if you took the Broome base.

I dont think the 12K Broome allowance or the 1K Darwin allowance will go very far at all.
They are both very expensive cities.
People in Karratha are paying $4-500/wk to rent a ROOM in a house.
A 3x1 house was reportedly renting for $80K/yr on news earlier this week.
I assume Broome will be very similar???

If so your 68K base bay isnt going to go too far at all.

Just before the GFC hit they were paying over 70-75K or more I think it was for a Broome FO with FIFO available.

That's true, and you could also apply if you were a Pommie.
I never understood why it was all changed about a couple of years back.

Cause the Captains got so bloody tired of hearing how much better it was in NZ from their FOs

Well given that the federal government has handed a strategic coastal surveillance contract to a UK company I think being careful about where their pilots were born is the least of their worries.

How many of the UK Directors hold Customs Clearances?

So how much does a BME based Baron Pilot make then?

Hey guys

I see they're advertising for Captains again.. anyone care to shed some light on what the job is like. Rosters, typical work day/night etc?

cheers :-)

Capn Bloggs 14th Dec 2015 22:50

Captains, eh? Better get the AFAP to negotiate a better package to make it more attractive...

Mark_Tuck 15th Dec 2015 03:39

Perhaps the challenger 604 positions were already taken (by some of the dash8 surveillance crew) when they were advertised several months ago - hence the now shortage of dash8 crew ...?
Sometimes jobs are advertised externally due to contractual / company requirements, but the jobs were never really available in the first place.... ?
