Chief Pilot- Currency?

Is there a requirement for the CP to 'fly the line' occasionally? Once approved as a CP is there a requirement to maintain currency, recency, etc if they choose to not fly the line? Does CASA renew the CP every year or two or once approved do you stay approved indefinitely?

Thanks for any info.

CAO 82 lays out the rules. basically a CP has to be current to execute his duties such as Training and Checking etc. To do this he has to be current, hold a valid medical, and a current MECIR if the organisation does IFR charter. In addition he has to be endorsed on all types operated by the company although I understand this may not always be the case especially in large companies like QANTAS. I am sure someone will correct me but this is a general outline of the way I see it.

If the CP is not endorsed on a particular type the company operates, thats OK, provided the company has a pilot nominated in a position that is basically the CP for that type only.
IIRC the CP of Broome Av isnt float-endorsed, so they have a "C208 Amphibian CP".

PA39 18th May 2011 11:15

FWIW and a little off thread but...FOI's have to get endorsed on an aircraft that they are not endorsed on so they can test you !! They put in an hour and you've got 3 or 4000 hrs on type and THEY are testing YOU !! :ugh:

Can a line pilot who is Night Current fly a company SEP NVFR private ops i.e ferry flight. If the Chief Pilot isn't night current?

There is a CP of a company operating High capacity Jets (in Aus) that is not endorsed on type nor does he have 1 hr jet command (or F/O time for that matter), so I guess the answer to your question is NO.

Keg 19th May 2011 04:05

Thanks all, particularly Renurrp. I guess that answers my question. I know of a CP of a HC AOC who hasn't flown the line since he became CP and rumours suggest he didn't fly the line whilst managing a particular fleet prior to that. Not sure if he stays current in the sim or not but it appears that's irrelevant anyway.

What a joke. :ugh:

What a joke.
Yep, absolutely.

Yes it's a joke!
Heard all the dialogue of "how busy it is".....etc etc................its a slippery soapbox with a disengaged audience in the end.

KRUSTY 34 21st May 2011 03:16

I know of a former Chief pilot who in order to maintain his Aura of authority did sucessful Sim checks every six months, whilst never flying the line. The head of check and training was in the same situation.

Guess who exclusively did each other's checks? :D

A condition imposed by CASA requires that particular position to be "non flying". Not sure about A330 but he was certainly flying the 76 while fleet mgr'. However that was a few years ago.

It depends on what you call a "Chief Pilot". My understanding is that "whatever the head of your flying operation is called" doesn't need to be current, but someone in the organisation must have responsibility for the CAR 217 organisation aka the "Chief Pilot". This could be the Head of Training and Checking.

RENURPP 21st May 2011 06:17

Maybe so Bloggs, but as you well know, neither of them (in the company I was reffering to )were current or checked to line on the type operated under the AOC

If the CP is not endorsed on all types it was my opinion the company requires "Fleet Capts" essentially reporting to the CP?

Defenestrator 22nd May 2011 02:06

"If the CP is not endorsed on all types it was my opinion the company requires "Fleet Capts" essentially reporting to the CP?"

CASA refer to such post holders as Type Specialists. AFAIK "Fleet Captain" is an internal company designation that refers to the same thing in the absence of the CP holding a rating on a company operated type.
