Very good post Mr.Hat and raises some very valid points.

Number of friends flying the big jet's overseas, all you hear when they go over is about the dream job and big money but as time goes on all your hear is grizzles about jet lag, poor lifestyle, asian management, camel rider management, Hong Kong pollution and lack of freedom's etc.

Couldn't wait to get out of Australia, now can't wait to get back.

A number are very keen to work for Tiger and more than happy to pay for the Airbus endorsement.

Funny breed pilots.

Gidday BuildnTime.

Simple question. One that may assist me in offering you some advice.

Crikey it's not rocket science!

What chances do a UK frozen ATPL ME/IR have with getting employment in Australia? With QantasLink or not... Also any info on a license conversion would be greatly appreciated.

redsnail 20th Feb 2011 13:43

g'day josh7, before looking at Australia, you need to be able to emigrate. ie get work visas and the like.

Converting your licence is comparatively easy (compared to going the other way.)
See CASA

With respect to a job. Well, unlike the UK, you can (almost) forget starting on a turbine, let alone a jet. (Of course there are exceptions).
You'll either instruct or you'll be heading North/West to fly scenics or work on a station.

Krusty,

Excuse me for the scepticism. In these forums with the grammar police and naysayers not to mention the head bangers :ugh:, it is rocket science

Hi building , I understand you point of view and in many ways represents exactly what I would like to know , I'm starting the ground school shortly QFLink DEFO, and i really don't know is is the right move for my Family. I do love flying and I worked really hard to get to this point , i'm 40 and already resign to a job which represents a pay cut of about 80Ks. Yeah , I know, it doesn't matter, being what I want to do, and there is not even one problem which will make me doubt about my decision.
My only concern is the commuting and the well-being of my family (wife, two kids dog and mortgage) introduced for this changes. I guess time will tell and there is a bit of passion about this beyond the economic reward. Some may laugh about this post, but that's the way i feel about this.
Hey I'm going to be paid for flying ! I have no problems with that.

pc148637, Mate if u can get hired at 40 that gives me a little bloody hope as I'm mid forties and desperately trying to get a flying job here in Perth.
Can I ask what u used to do if U R taking an 80K pay cut???
Good luck with it all. :ok:

PS, cx your PMs.:ok:

pc148637,

Congratulations on ground school :ok:

My biggest motivation was and is that I don't want to be 65 looking to the sky thinking, what if?

Follow your passion. You can always return to your (trade) if it is not what you thought.

That's my plan.

This forum would be packed with family men and women who had to do the move. It would be good to hear how their children adjusted and experiences.

pc148637 21st Feb 2011 11:48

That's exactly right , and that's what I'm talking about. I honestly didn't think this would happen at this age , and I wouldn't like to regret it when is too late.
If it doesn't work for me, I promise I'll apologize to the missus , and start again , but in the mean time I'll do all I can to be where I'd like to be.
I'm a Professional Engineer about 25 years in the industry but that was an accident, I'm actually a pilot ( my first pilot license was obtained 2 years before my engineering) and I paid for my flying time back then by cleaning windscreens washing aircraft and doing a lot of lawn mowing in the club. So it took a while but finally I've got my chance , I'm very happy :O
