Birdbath at YSRI

Was perusing the Notams for Richmond and saw this

C0065/11 REVIEW C0052/11
BIRD BATH NOT AVBL
FROM 01 250423 TO 02 010500 EST
Eh ?

The Hercs taxi through a pad with water spray jets, or 'bird bath', after doing a SAR/SAREX to wash off the salt. The pad is just in front of the tower.

Trust me on this.....not suitable for motor vehicles.

Its very amusing when a helicopter uses it and they forget to close all the doors !

2 of them at YSNW, radio activated, taxi/hover into the circle, key the mike, and make sure all windows and vents are shut..

as said before, used to wash salt residue off the airframe and engine internals.

notams

They can publish RAAF operational information....

....but they still can't publish notams about no-fuel.....

Essentially yes... not entirely my fault though.
Whilst working with ronnie raaf in about 2004 a few newbies asked if i'd help them out with some airfield famil early one morning (prior to ATC opening) both other medics were more than competent, just lacking some confidence using the then MBZ procedures. I was sitting in the back of a service ambulance more or less for moral support, clearly communication between the front and the back wasn't exactly perfect and one thing lead to another and we headed directly for the 'bath'. Before I could explain that they really shouldn;t continue over it we were over the sensor and we were breaking water restrictions. Very impressive i must say from the inside.
Upon return we found it had busted one side of the light beacons on the roof, doesn't sounds like much but to replace it was over $1000.
I also called the guys in the tower later and they said they were in the tower at the time and watched the entire show. Not one of my finest hours.

Poohead,

Maybe not your finest hour but they would have laughed their arses off and it would have made their day. ;)

We used to try and activate it on LIGHT setting, as the AMBO crossed it during newbies airfield driver training (Radio activated ones that is).

For any others who might care, the "Bird Bath" has a more technical description in ERSA. It is known as the "AWF" or, Aircraft Wash Facility.

Lock it into the grey matter it folkes, it might win you a trivia contest one night.
