Memories Of The Ansett Companies
 

Inherited recently many hundreds of slides and photos, some like these dating back to the 1960s of travelling on the long gone Ansett-ANA.

Thought some may like to see them, just excuse the quality as they are from slides originally and as I said more than 40 years old.

Not sure, all 3 photos are at Sydney Airport though in the 1960s. :)

There was a fantastic read published about 10 years ago.

The history of Holyman, ANA, and Ansett. Their involvement with the airlines of overseas countries, like Cathay, Canadian Pacific Air Lines, Ceylon and Egypt!

Also some background on Government owned airline TAA, and the two airline policy!

Somewhere in my garage, but I can't find it at present, so unsure of the exact title.

No hits with google unfortunately, but well worth getting your hands on it! If only I can find the title!! :}

A good book, despite a few inaccuracies. What a bloody exciting era, now sadly mostly forgotten.

Those were the only 3 pictures of Ansett-ANA among my Parents things, but anyone else of course feel free to add any other photos. :ok:

Of all the great airlines that have disappeared in recent years, Ansett is the one I will miss most. I flew with them back in 1993, from Perth to Sydney, when they used to run "Mystery Flights"; it was an A320 - my first A320 flight - to Sydney and what a treat it was; superbly comfortable seats, real glasses, wonderful crews. Coming back, it was a 767- three man crew, three class aircraft, although F class was being used as J Class and the Business Class cabin, for economy; I recall the gate agent smiling as he offered to change my seat assignment to one of the Business Class seats; that was a treat.

A great loss to aviation (and Australia), but long may its memory survive.

As I said before they are the only ones I have of Ansett-ANA, but IF we now include Ansett (that is post Ansett-ANA) I have some others that may, or may not, be of interest.

These are of the original Ansett B767s being built at Boeing back in the early 1980s, again PLEASE excuse the quality of the photos I had a VERY basic camera and while not illegal they didn't actually encourage you to take photos.

The 767s are (were) built from scratch inside the Factory, then go outside to have the engines etc fitted, and in the case of Ansett they came back in later to convert to 3 man crew configuration.

This is one of Ansett DC9 VH-CZC, another of my favourites, in Townsville in the early 1970s. :ok:

This particular aircraft, not the day this photo was taken though, was almost lost ex Townsville one afternoon with a runaway stabiliser. :eek:

You can tell it is not in Australia, the health and safety police would never allow this behaviour here. ;)

Wow,airsupport....you Ansett guys did it tough. In TAA all aircraft had a dash mounted clock. I can't imagine how hard it would be on a dark & stormy night trying to do a timed turn with that on your lap.

Ansett could NOT afford one for EVERY aircraft. :rolleyes:

As I am sure you know, it was for 25 years of loyal service, still going fine except for a battery change every now and then, and proudly displayed in the lounge room. :ok:

Hi I am hoping somebody can help me. My father was seconded from the RAAF to ANA to be a wireless operator on these flights.

Dad had a special attachment to one of the DC-3’s It wasCDC

Many years later, Dad made his way back to Archerfield and his last job before retiring, was as maintenance manager for the police air wing.

I was a flight attendant 1969-1973

Ansett has a special place in my heart. Any light that can be shed will be greatly appreciated.

I remember the day the first B767 arrived.

VH-CDC was a USAAF C-49A (DC3). The Douglas C-49 was the designation given to 138 Wright Cyclone powered Dc-3s impressed into the USAAF after the US entry into World War II.

The aircraft was operated by ANA on behalf of the USAAF. It crashed at Tacloban in the Philippines on Tuesday 13 November 1945 with the loss of three crew and 13 passengers. There was only one survivor.
