what the hell was that. POM

Did anyone in POM see the aircraft parked over near where the Falcon parks before a sojourn?.
High wing, lots of Dihedral with floppy looking high aspect ratio wing. Engines were on the top of the wing with enormous props looked like half an Osprey the props were that big.
Looks like something to do with high alt work or something. Strange looking beast.

Also suspect it was an AN32 from your description. This is the hot and high version of the AN26 with double the engine power.

Someone show us a pic of the rear end. Could be a possible Caribou replacement.. :suspect:

The Green Goblin 11th Jul 2010 22:58

Designed and built in the early 70s and needing about 1300m to take-off I highly doubt it would replace the venerable bou!

Plus the fact it's Russian, I doubt that would go down well with the powers that be

Like all Russian birds though they are so ugly that they are beautiful and always practical instead of ergonomic. You can't beat the 30 man Russian Flight deck - must be some interesting parties up there!

notmyC150v2 12th Jul 2010 01:46

Looking at Russian Aircraft always makes me think that they are built from plans that have been put through the washing machine.

For gods sake Ivan take the plans out of your pocket before getting undressed!!!

Hasn't seemed to have bothered the powers that be who have been allowing a certain operator to operate Russian helicopters up there for years...

You'd be working pretty hard in here on a dark stormy night doing an approach!

It's a Russian Truck! Look closely, it gives the TARE WT of 16,665kg :E

The Green Goblin 12th Jul 2010 02:27

Pretty similar layout inside to the mighty SA227 :{

j3pipercub 12th Jul 2010 02:33

Waghi Warrior 12th Jul 2010 06:31

Wiz, when was it POM, Saturday morning by any chance ? I saw something coming in with smoke contrails on Saturday morning from the west. The contrails were quite noticeable from about 7 miles out especially considering they were on approach ! Must guzzle like I guzzle white cans !!!!

the wizard of auz 12th Jul 2010 06:43

Yup, twas Saturday Morning. and I agree, it must guzzle fuel like I guzzle the handles at the Dero. Smoke was billowing from it when it left....... You could track it to its destination I reckon......... Oh, I'm outta here.... Time for an ice cold handle of SP. :ok:
