Storm Damage Melbourne Area
Has the hail damaged any aircraft at Essendon or Moorabbin? I have never seen brown before on a radar image.

The live streaming images were awesome (on the BOM website). The brown is land, the black is heavy/severe rain.
The remainder of racing at Flemington was cancelled and I get home, check the weather radar and see more rolling storms and also the MEL arrivals and departures queue looks amusingly long. "Delayed, delayed, delayed..." Word from an associate at Moorabbin is that there was some minor damage to an a/c belonging to either MFS of MFT - but said associate is known for talking absolute bollocks. |
When its that colour......dig a deep hole and hide!
I think YMMB fared fairly well, most of the damage was to the east towards the Dandenongs.
haha the brown is land !! :}
The video's floating around of the rivers, I mean streets in the CBD are amazing!
Melton copped it pretty badly, with heavy hail the size of golf balls. About half a dozen cars were badly dented (inlcuding mine :{) and the windows of the building we were in were smashed.

Phil, yet again THE MAN with a great shot! :D
That damage on the ground is heartbreaking no doubt, but I would rather than than flying into it! J |
Yes, I did consider taking the Whale down until I checked the forecast. Glad I didn't now...
That would have been a disaster :uhoh: Fifty years of loyal service to the world and flogged in a hail storm! Glad she was out of harms way!
how did the composite aircraft fair?
I wonder how many light aircraft at Essendon did not have their rudder chocked and therefore may have internal damage such as cable break or stretch. There is a CAO (?) somewhere - or used to be, anyway) that says an LAME must check any unrestrained control surfaces if the winds exceed 30 knots (?) including gusts. TEM is a good reason to install rudder chocks.

Good question GG
I hope I never have to test this for real :uhoh: but if our Retard Vehicle were in that hail storm the Composite sections would be fine! The rest would be more like a golf ball or worse :ooh: |
I've a pretty good idea whose 310 that is. Be a good excuse for a repaint (after the repair :uhoh:) if it can be repaired.
Yeah Ive always wondered about the composites in that situation. You would not see physical damage but would it severely weaken the internal structure?
I used to instruct in a 150 that was covered in golf ball like speed dimples and it flew just fine until mother nature came back and finished her off with a hangar door. I hope there weren't any new aircraft on the ground that got written off.
I doubt there is a structural problem from hail.....but I do not know for sure.
If that hail hit me I would have some structural issues :ouch: |
This 310 is probably a write-off Dr :8 |
Won't see a poor panelbeater around Melbourne over the next few months!!
Insurance write-off perhaps, but I'll bet it flys again. Couple of new skins and a repaint = betterer than new! |
