Aussie training in New Zealand
 

Hello,
After completing my year twelve studies over here in Australia, I am thinking about going to New Zealand for my flight training. By that time I hope to have my private licence. After completing my training I would more than likely come back home and look for a job up north.
How is this looked upon by operators?
Has anyone on here done it before and have you had any problems?

Trainiing in nz is a great experience. Was fortunate enough to have completed my cpl and cir there. I hear that its very easy for australian student to study there and have the flying funded by the nz studylink scheme. Just be prepared to wait a while for your licence conversion to go through when you arrive back home. Some people have waited more than 6 months.

Strip as many pennys as ya can from the Kiwis and never look back :cool:

Make sure you get all the fruit before you leave CPL, CIR, Tail Wheel, Low Level. FIR and chuck in a few useful endorsements as well. Baron/travelair C310, PA31, C402, PN68 and a BE76 for renewals in AU comes in handy too. Hell do it all in a twin if its funded by the kiwi purse!

Hopefully if more Aussies do it they will pull the scheme and there will be less Kiwis in Australia stealing our jobs :p

Just don't be surprised when they track you down in the future and take from you everything you have worked for.

Low Level?? Even our PPL's have to do low flying as part of their training (low flying = 500' agl and below)!

does studylink cover a few different flight schools or is it just the massey university course?

Certain approved training facilities, check the Nelson Marlborough tech site for that info.

Yes, they can.

But when considering training there, take into account all the living costs etc. It is very expensive to live in New Zealand, much more so than in Australia. You won't be able to get any student benefits as far as I'm aware, so you'll be paying everything bar the flying yourself.

Considering that they allow 18 months for the Diploma (It can be done in less obviously), It may be worth just going for the Degree.

Aside from that, Im a New Zealander and have my name down for the program. :)

When I was living in new zealand the cost was alot cheaper for me at uni, I was in Christchurch so it's probably always going to be cheaper then melbourne... I was able to receive student allowance after 2 years of living in the country, but to start with you could always use studylink loans there were no restrictions on that. Also with the arrangement you do not need visas for work so finding a job is easy to make a little bit of money on the side. I wish i had thought of what you have as an option when I did my pilots licence.

There is no way on earth the cost of living is higher in NZ.

If you haven't been there long enough to qualify for the student allowance you can borrow $160 a week on top of your student loan. Its not a lot, but means you can work less and focus a bit more on studying.

18 months is if you take your time. It took me 12 months from 0hrs to CPL, MEIR, and instructor rating.

Interest free while in NZ, and if you move overseas you can freeze payments for 3 years, after which the cap on the maximum they can make you pay is $1500 every 6 months. With interest though, that would mean going backwards on repayments and never paying it off.

Not willing to work for less at all. And don't think that guys in nz are happy about J* T's & C's and accept that as market rate. A few may work for them but most won't. It's exploitation by C#ntas.
Unfortunately salaries are less in NZ across all industries, but I wouldn't say it's expensive to live in compared to Aussie. Yes student loans are interest free, but only if you stay in the country. Leave and you will owe interest. About 8% I think.

ben_093: Re living costs, food is a major item anywhere.

A recent article on TV in NZ had an Aussie complaining about the cost of food in Oz against NZ.
He filled a trolley in a supermarket on OZ, ( I think it was Sydney) then flew to Auckland and did the same there.
Exactly the same number of items, same brands, same manufacturers, same size, every item in the trolley was the same.

IIRC it was so much cheaper in Auckland the difference paid for the airfare and he still had a few dollars left over.

I wouldn't be able to make an exact figure on food costs, but im sure they are similar. I do know that electricity is expensive as is petrol; and yes, wages are a lot lower.

Whether that equates to greater living costs I'm not sure.

The fact that he/she/it posts on every thread involving NZ gives me the feeling the Green Goblin is actually a closet Kiwi :}
