Education

Hey Guys,

Just a question, I am struggling with Maths Methods (CAS) which is the second highest maths in Victoria and a requirement for the military.

I was wondering how closely the airlines look at your subjects in school? If I were to go for the maths one down do you think that would hinder my chances of getting employed by the major airlines?

Cheers,

Logan

From the QF website:
The lowest level of Year 12 Mathematics in most Australian states does not meet the pilot recruitment minimum criteria.

So (based on what it was in my day) it'd mean that Methods or Specialist maths are the only ones acceptable for mainline QANTAS.

Get a tutor, ask for help.

Yep, ive read that, but there is a lower maths then the one I would do if I were to go down one.

So I'm not sure on that.

Qantas have been particulally vague about the Victorian maths requirement, and have contradicted themselves on their website about it before. I have
asked the question directly in the past and they were unable/unwilling to answer.

Personally, if you think you can manage it, I'd stick with Methods. If you need a tutor, then thats what you might need, but I'd think that ultimately it will be worth it, as well as keeping open future options (not just in flying)

To be 100% honest, you will most probably never use anything in the math methods course when flying an aircraft. I guess if you have intentions on joining the military or red roo in the future, you just gotta do it!!

My understanding is that high school Maths and English are a tick in the box, it allows Qantas to exclude a certain amount of candidates who didn't finish high school. As long as you complete and pass the required level it doesn't make any difference, you still need to show a certain level of intelligence to pass your Phyc and Skills testing during the first stage of the interview process.

If there's any advise that I can pass on to any wanabee Qantas pilots, pass the required subjects at school, study your ass off and get the pass, get help if required, because once it done, it's done! Believe me, once you start your flying training you will have enough study on your hands, so having these subjects hanging over your head with the prospect of having to complete intense equivalent course is not pretty.

At the end of the day it doesn't hurt to ask, drop them an email.

Little late but for what it is worth, stick with methods.

I did both Methods and Further (the one below methods, which is actually a heck of a lot more practical for typical daily use unless you are actually NEEDING what methods teaches!)

Struggled my arse off with methods. Got a tutor. Didn't do too badly and got more than I expected.
A pass is over 30% too isn't it?????

Thanks a lot guys. I have decided to stick with the Methods, and get a tutor if I really need one.

:ok:

You are joking right, 30% for a pass there is hope for me yet.

when they reply to your email remember to print off and save their reply for any future application/s in case they decide to change the goal posts.

ironmanlogan,

Don't feel discouraged mate. I did the equivalent of methods in QLD known as Maths B. Failed it the 1st semester Yr 11, barely past in the 2nd semester and managed to top my class by the end of Yr 12.

Definetely useful to have (if not in aviation) if you plan on going to uni as a backup plan.

Good luck with it! :ok:
