Clean shoes

G'day SUPER G,

Great post, the spirit of p prune and flying. Have done this type of flying in another life and your post rekindled my memory from days long gone. I had pretty much the same flying experience when I did my first trip. The only thing I would add, (with out trying to sound like I am telling grandma how to suck eggs) have your ID current and valid to access all area's AND dress like you are going somewhere and you are wearing "all the fruit".

Happy landing's sport,

500's

That's the way Slackie! Buggered if I know what I was doing wrong......

Awesome post brings back many memories of my life in the ferry business and also reminds me why I am happy to be out of it in some ways.

One of the most beautiful scenes I have look at was a band of coral reefs in the Red Sea we flew over on a leg from Djibouti to Jeddah.

The HF is O.K. if your Satellite phone goes dead.:E

Was it an aurigny air services aircraft in its earlier days?

Is that a rear vision mirror next to the pilots door? For check 6 or make sure not get rammed from behind? Cool looking machine.

If only Mr Boeing put a rear vision mirror on his planes then they would be perfect..........

Fantastic post - I am sure everyone has enjoyed the sharing of your adventures and experiences. Good on you and a job well done.

Troppo, not sure where it started life around 1984 but before it was painted in big bird colours in 2000 it was with the Zimbabwe Air Force. The previous Greek owner (A340 Captain) ferried it up (along with another one from Africa later) with a view to running a small airline from the mainland to the Greek Islands.

Unfortunately he did only one flight and then Sept 11 occured and the Greek authorities regulated him out of business and the two Tris have sat in Sparta ever since. My boss is already talking about going back later in the year to collect the other one as apparently a guy in Fiji wants to lease one.:ugh:

Bolt - yes that is a rear view mirrow and part of our regular CLEAROFF checks was to have a quick glance back to make sure she wasn't on fire or the cowls weren't being shaken off. There is a rear engine fire warning light on the panel and also a switch which you activate pre take off which activates a flashing light to tell you it's armed. If you do have a rear engine failure on take off it will stay on telling you the rear donk has stopped. Believe it or not without that light it's quite difficult to recognise that the engine is not operating which I so ably proved while taxying away from parking in Darwin. I started all engines normally, called for taxi, and moved off thinking I was using way more power than usual to get moving and then turning. It took the other pilot pointing to the rear engine tacho reading zero (which we both initially thought was faulty) and then confirmation using the rear view that the engine had stopped.

The other big problem with these aircraft is prop sync which is a complete bugger to get absolutely right. Only through a couple of days of trial and error did we get them close to sync'ed and even then after 8-10 hours flying I still had blurry vision because of the harmonic the engines were blasting through my muscular skeletel system!:ouch:

It would make a great magazine article.......

To all the ATC guys and girls from Greece to Vanuatu. Thanks for your patience and tollerance of a 90kt CLIAS aircraft in your arrival and departure flow. Particularly to the Calcutta departures controller who didn't realise how slow we were and gave us runway heading as a departure instruction while the tower controller lined up jets for take-off behind us and with multiple jets on ILS final. I've never heard so many jets get spun off an ILS in my life! That poor bastard is probably still in the nut house cursing our call sign!
The other reason for the rear vision mirror on the TriBongo is so you can get out of the way of Geese and other migratory birds wanting to pass.

great post:ok: And despite all the hassles, ferry flying is still the best there is (except gliding, survey, mustering, helicopter ops, charter and airline.)

Spanners Flying !!

I was the flying Spanner and the budget consious Boss, along the way I re-fitted an Altenator that was looking to take a long drop in the Indian Ocean, a Stater Benbix and later on In Bali I was able to get the exhuast Welded up and re-fitted and in Mt ISA I replased two and cleaned 4 of the Six fuel filters and changes a second Starter Pinion/bendix, the rest of the time I spent pumping fuel in to the wings to keep us in the air. We had a spare Starter and a spare bendix , Spare wheel assy , brake parts Engine Gaskets and a full set of tools. (Weight is not a problem in a Trislander)A spare Altinator and just about every Instrtment in the A/C exsept a Encoder which gave touble intill we were able to get it fixed In the M.E. and calibrated on the way out of KL.
I spent 7 weeks in Greece geting the A/C ready with the help of My daughter and Mr BN-TIM as We now call him. It had been Opperating Zimbabwea and Botswana befor it was taken to Greece in 2001 and was out of the Air for 8 years after the 11th September Attacks put a halt on GA in Europe.

We had budgeted for 14 hours Endurance @ 180 L/H Knowing we had a 12 hour Leg but in reality we had 16 hours Plus , as we were able to run it lean of peek most of the way at 9,000 feet . The Trislander has to be one of the easest A/C to Ferry as there is so much room in sidde for lots and lots of Fuel. The ferry system Fed fuel in to the Main tanks via two diffrent sets of Hoses and 4 diffrent pumps, so we had buit in redundcy every were. We even had a Old "Drumn Good" hand pump if the electrics failed (or if the Refulers were contakerass as in Kalkata) There was a back up 25 AH battery too and in fact just one of the 3 Elc pumps was suficent to Keep all 3 engines runing off the main tanks for up 10 hours with the level only droping by 11 Galeo in each tank; but most of the time we ran the mains down to 40 Gals and pumped them back up to 50 Gals' each hour or so. I figured that if I keept the tanks 2/3 full i would still have time to fix any Fuel Transfer Problems well befor it got quiet !
