A question for QF 737-800 drivers
VXH was seen at MEL DOM bay 4 late at night with it's LOGO lights flashing continually for over 20 mins. Not random flashing but on and off at an even pace.
The Nav lights were off, interior lights were off and there appeared to be no one around, like it was put to bed for the night. I've never seen flashing LOGO lights before? I've seen Flashing Landing lights and flashing Nav lights ( mainly on military types but also on the older 707's and 727's ) but not logo lights? What's the story? |
Funny that...
Yesterday, I noticed an overflying B737 approaching Brisbane airport with it's landing lights flashing continually. I live under the approach about 12nm from the airport, so I see quite a few airplanes, but this was the first one I've seen with flashing landing lights...I watched it for a minute or two, it was definitely the landing lights...they were reflected on the forward fuselage as it flew abeam my position. Flashing on about every two seconds... ...never seen that before.. Cheers..FD...:ooh: |
FD, the landing lights on the 737 have been doing that for about 1-2 years now if I recall. Pretty sure all of them are fitted out with it.
The Dash 8's also do it. morno |
Can't help with the logo light question, but flashing landing lights were set up at QF to help scare birds away
|
Aren't the flashing landing lights on the Dash's supposed to be a bird scaring tactic?
|
yes the flashing landing lights are designed to scare birds, been in use in the USA for years and years.
With regards to the QF 738 I thought there may have been a problem with the ground power tripping on and off, but that much and for that long??????????? If the ground power trips off it needs to me manually re-connected anyway? Any 738 QF guys out there with the answer? Surely flashing logo lights wouldn't achieve much? |

The landing light system is called Pulselite - http://preciseflight.com/products/pulselite
|
New 800s have a pulse selection on the logo switch.
Crews can select at night to enhance safety / collision avoidance. |
Great!
Another thing for pilots to have to do in a busy terminal environment. Flashing lights off and on during an approach! bbzzzzzzzzzbbbbbbbbbzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz |
The F/O's got nothing better to do anyway Buzzy...:E

Yeah, saw Air Van's Logo flashing the othe night into BNE too... Wondered the same qn as the DJ 73's dont have that option... As a side note, I notice qf 73's taxi around ( i think - but at least depart) with the wing lights on. 100% understand why you wanna be as visable as possible at night, but as they pass on the T/W or Runway, it can easily kill yr night vision with the narrow beam of light just prior to yr own departure. Though so do strobes I know... And interestingly, DJ dont have any formal use for the wing lights in that regard either (except low-and-behold, to see ice... on the wing... :p). Ill duck now and I know the guys are just following SOP's, but its bloody overkill if you ask me.

I must say that in a busy environment such as LAX and JFK I too switch on the wing lights.
UA have done it for years. And UA don't have any logo lights on a lot of their A/C either. Hadn't seen the pulsing Logo light before, If you fly along side a QF 738 and miss the bright strobes ( white and red ) and Nav lights I don't think a flashing logo will help. I think there are enough flashing lights in the sky already, don't you? |
yes the flashing landing lights are designed to scare birds |
Setting lights to pulse not just used to scare birds. Most operators put them on through transition, particularly operating into a CTAF to assist with see-and-avoid. Similarly for departure up to TA. Obviously, the lights are left at steady at night.
They are very effective - something to do with a changing image in the visual field being more easily detected. |
Some Business jets that have the pulselight system fitted have it linked to the TCAS system and in an RA or TA event, all the exterior lights go nuts and flash to allow you to be seen better. Maybe the logo light is linked to this also??
Best I could come up with!!:} |
