Qantas Targets Older Male Staff

Are you over 50yrs old?
Are you male?
Are you in a defined benefit Super Scheme?
Have you been an employee for over 20 yrs?
If you meet all the above criteria....Qantas Managment has you in its sights.
Quite simply...they want you out.
If you fall into this demographic chances are you have had meetings with a manager or a supervisor over the most trivial of circumstances or occurrences.
Management are sending a very clear message....you no longer fit in .
Qantas wants to be seen as young and dynamic. This demographic doesnt suit this corporate self perception.
Cabin Crew for example have a disciplinary clause in their EBA..
The widely applied Clause 11.
In the last three years there have been no less than 32 Clause 11s issued.
Chocolategate was an example.
With one exception all were male and all over 50 with more than 20 years of service.
Be careful gentlemen ..you are a target

Over 50% of Engineering

I am sure somebody will know the exact figures but it sounds like half of engineering will go ! Last I heard the majority of LAMEs fell into this category.
However there are about 8 or 10 LAMEs in Brisbane who have been fighting for their VR since last year and QF still won't let them go!
Maybe they will get what they want soon?
Good luck to them !

Jazzy78910 3rd Dec 2008 08:43

what about all the seasoned Captains behind the panels of their lovely big Jets? I can't see them offloading that kind of experience for no good reason..?

Ka.Boom 3rd Dec 2008 09:05

The Airforce?

Arent the airforce and Qantas looking at sharing a pool of pilots?
Maybe the guys in this demographic will being flying Hercs soon?

Angle of Attack 3rd Dec 2008 14:05

I thought this was a pilots forum quite frankly,
I have to say these posts make no sense to me anyway,
Maybe there should be a trolley dolly rumour network all this crap can be put there.
:ok:

Angle of Attack 3rd Dec 2008 14:08

If you want to flame me im just geeing you up btw lol! :)

Crusty Demon 3rd Dec 2008 22:37

For those who don't know this thread is referring to cabin crew and not tech crew. Just do a search on the history of QF cabin crew threads on this network and you will get the idea very quickly.

Don't know why they don't troll cabin crew specific forums. Perhaps because they have been banned from all of them :\.

indamiddle 4th Dec 2008 03:06

i think the results after a few years will show up like this.
40+ year olds.... positive re alcohol.
under 40 y.o..... positive re drugs.
this is for flight attendants. wonder what the pilots' results would be like?

The Green Goblin 4th Dec 2008 06:55

I don't want to be rude to the older experienced CC in QF but seriously, you can see airlines are an image thing It's nice to jump on DJ and see pretty little blondes creeping up and down the catwalk - sure beats the prunes of QF on the '67 fleet thats for sure! It's even better being made to feel like the king on an asian carrier by petit little things that you can dream about on those lonely overnighters :D

A hag suckin' on sour grapes throwing you a bag of pretzels and a 250ml bottle of water just cant compete! and a 50+ year old Elton John wannabe sends chills (i don't mind gay men though, the more gay men, the more women for me!!)

packrat 4th Dec 2008 07:37

In An Emergency?

Will the lovely blondes and the petite little things save your arse.?
If the big gorilla sitting next to you suddenly becomes violent will they stop him from rearranging your face?
If a rugby forward wants to touch up your wife or girlfriend who will chastize him and make him stop?
The little blonde will?
These girls do a great job but they are generally window dressing for salivating yobbos with a small lump in their duds.
Sexism in the air.
Sing Air has turned into an artform.

twiggs 4th Dec 2008 07:49

So packrat, your saying it's a safety requirement to having balding overweight yobbos on the crew?

The Green Goblin 4th Dec 2008 07:57

I'm sure the young blonde will be a safer bet in a full emergency than an old duck, after all the spring chicken will be more agile, less complacent and generally not as entrenched in the old school mentality, having youthful enthusiasm vs the i've worked here for 30 years you owe me something for all my hard work (you were paid for it where you not?)

Anyway i'm just stirring :ok:

Crusty Demon 4th Dec 2008 09:05

So the 50 year old QF drama queens will charge around handbag swinging in the event of a brawl? That I would like to see.

Is it only QF that has a requirement for flight attendants to be bouncers now? Then again, the air crash investigation shows are full of stories about punchups in the cabin. Obviously the biggest hazard in flying.

Hempy 4th Dec 2008 09:06

re: In An Emergency?

Sorry packrat, give me the blondes. To quote a male hostie on a Russian domestic when queried about the standard of the seating; "Why you need seatbelt? We crash, you die.."

prunezeuss 4th Dec 2008 09:09

History Lesson

Up until 1985 Qantas employed a large percentage of men to be CC.
There were usually one or two women who worked in P/C made PAs and distributed documents.
Qantas Didnt become an equal opportunity til around this time.
The old ducks previously alluded to are actually beehives who have transferred from the domestics.
The balding fat yobbos alluded to have largely gone.VR has removed around 1200 CC over the last seven years.
The average of Qantas Crew is around 39 years.
The previous posters need to be aware that things have changed.
If you want old you need look no further than any American Carrier.
If you want ancient with attitude have a look at BA.
So lets put these things in context and provide for a balanced discussion.
Try and keep exaggeration and silly perceptions conjured up from the bottom of an empty Jack bottle to a minimum shall we.
It might be fun to stir the natives but it does fact and truth no good at all

DEFCON4 4th Dec 2008 09:21

CC Acronym:Crowd Control

Some of you boofheads are mildly amusing.
The number of 50 year old hand bag swingers on Qantas have been rplaced by women.
Women are around 75% of Longhaul Cabin Crew.A lot of you know nothings have your own balding heads and fat bellies firmly wedged in the late 70s.
Get with the programme. Its 8 years into the 21st century. The majority of Qantas CC are young, single and female.
Qantas employs around 5000 crew.Less than 700 have over 25 years seniority and less than 250 are over 55.
So you boofheads .....get your facts right before you open your gob and prove beyond a doubt that you are a fool.
Those that are over 55 and have been around awhile are not compliant and have a wealth of experience.
Qantas wants them gone because they dont do as they are told like some 25 yr old with no life experience

Bazzamundi 4th Dec 2008 17:17

Why not go to a cabin crew forum to continue your bitching somewhere more appropriate. Every thread here involving QF long haul cabin crew turns into a childish waste of time.

lowerlobe 4th Dec 2008 20:08

Bazzamundi.....You don't have to read this thread do you?

Then again it's no use trying to have a thread about any cabin crew subject when you read inflammatory comments like this from Twiggs with the intention of closing the subject off.The company does not like to see any adverse comments about it's perceived policies...

So packrat, your saying it's a safety requirement to having balding overweight yobbos on the crew?
When you read this and see what the office thinks about male cabin crew then it's difficult for some not to respond.

Twiggs....Yes some men do suffer from hair loss at some point in their lives and not necessarily that old. However,if you are suggesting that women do not suffer from ageing and weight gain then there will be a great number of plastic surgeons and weight loss centres out of a job....

Yes, it is a service industry and yes it is about image but also about efficiency and the end result of customers feeling as though they have received value for money....as well as feeling safe both from the aircraft operational aspect and from the ability of cabin crew to deal with any number of situations than can arise.

Those abilities are not limited to the young.....
