How often are law documents updated?
Hi all,
About to start ATPL Air Law study, and will need to pick up a copy of CARs, CAOs, etc. For my CPL studies I just used the regs off the CASA website. It appears the CAR, CAO and CAAP amendment services are ridiculously expensive. My question is threefold: 1. How often are these documents amended? 2. Are the amendments often just tedious changes? 3. Are the documents available free-of-charge on CASA's website updated with each amendment that comes out? Can get free printing at work, so would like to save some money if I can by printing them off myself. Thanks, toronto_flyer. |
All documents are available free and up to date on the CASA website, the AIP and DAP are also available via a link to airservices website.

Yes they are available on the Web via CASA's website "current rules" link CASA has an EMail list service that will keep you informed of regulatory changes :ok: The issue you will find, I think, is that computer-generated home-printed editions of the books are not permitted in the exams (or that was the rule when I did 'em). Leafblower, I took them into the CPL Air Law exam and they were fine - I think I read somewhere that they are permitted in the cyberexams. Could somebody verify this please? toronto_flyer. |

For future reference (straight from CASA's website regarding materials permitted in CyberExams) :
Self printed copies of CARs, CAOs and CAAPs downloaded from the CASA website are acceptable subject to the following:

I just downloaded them off the CASA website, went into office works with them on a USB drive and payed to have them printed and hole punched to fit into my old CASA files.
Saves the $500 odd dollars to buy them! |
If I have this right, the documents go through an update process every 28 days (or multiple thereof) in accordance with ICAO. AIP is on a 56 day update, I think.

My recommendation is:
Get the Jepps from the get-go for AIP's, TAC's, DAP's etc., and just print the CAO's/CAR's once off for the exams. You'll only need the latter once (i.e. for the exam), and then if you want to look something up in the future, you might just as well go to the website and check out the latest version. If you're on your way to the airlines or larger GA operators, you'll sooner or later have to switch to Jepps which you'll need on paper on a daily basis, so you might just as well start with them. The Jepps are much lighter to carry than the ASA stuff, they're more logical in their presentation, and generally, why on earth would anyone want to contribute to that money-grabbing tax-collecting controller-maltreating excuse for a company anyway :yuk: AIP/DAP change every three months on average (next amendment effective Nov 23, not looking forward to processing the 3cm stack that's on my desk :{), and you'll definitely want to use current DAP's and TAC's :eek:. The updates are too involved to sort them out from a website, so shelling out for a nice set of brown folders is way to go.. it's just over one hour dual in a twin :ouch: |

My advice is use the versions on the CASA website but you need to know when they change. So try this..
All CAO and CARs (but not CAAPs) are required to be registered at the Federal Register of Legislative Instruments (FRLI). Go to this website and setup a service that notifies you when CAOs/CARs are changed. |
It appears CASA has a emailing list regarding regulation changes and a number of other interesting topics, which you can apply for here. It looks like it may do the same thing as the FRLI, though I stand to be corrected.

Gary Gnu, how do you go about setting up a notification service at the Federal Register of Legislative Instruments (FRLI)? That link you posted four years ago goes to a generic page now.
