A Couple of IREX Questions
 
Hi All
I've got my IREX exam tomorrow and I need a little help with a few practice exam questions I got wrong. If anyone can help with a correct answer and an explanation or a reference (more importantly) then I'd appreciate it. Here we go.......
1. Surface temp = 9 cloudbase 1500ft AGL. If temp lapse 3 degrees per 1000ft in clear air and 1.5 degrees in cloud determine the freezing level in the cloud.
2. Departing Perth in OZY. Most recent Instrument approach was 45 days ago and no other instrument approaches in the last 90 days. ATIS shows wind 220/20 and plan to return to Perth if engine failure in IMC after take off. What is the met minima for this departure?
Choices were 207ft and 0.8, 257 and 1.2, 693 and 2.4, 507ft and 2.8km. I chose 693...
3. Select the minimum instrument time in aeroplanes within the last 90 days required by a pilot with a Command Instrument Rating to act as pilot in command on a single pilot IFR flight in an aeroplane
·1 hour PIC instrument flight time in an aircraft certified for single-pilot including one instrument approach
·1 hour PIC instrument time on an approved synthetic trainer including one instrument approach
·1 hour ICUS instrument time on any IFR aircraft including one instrument approach
·1 hour ICUS instrument flight time in an aircraft certified for single-pilot operations, including one instrument approach
4. depart Quilpie on runway 27 for an IFR flight to Windorah in VH-OZY. You plan to return to Quilpie in the event of an engine failure in IMC after take-ofF. The meteorological minima which apply for this take-off are a cloud ceiling of
·300 ft and visibility of 2 km
·1210 ft and visibility of 3.1 km
·2900 ft and visibility of 5 km
·555 ft and visibility of 3.1 km
5. flight via W364 from Kowanyama to Gove at A060 in VH-OZY. Your flight planned ground speed is 180 kt and the GPS has been removed for maintenance. The ARFOR indicates a 20 kt headwind.select the statement which is correct regarding the planning of this flight if it is to be conducted under the IFR
·the flight could be planned only if it was not charter or RPT
·the flight could be planned
·the flight could not be planned because the EET is greater than 2 hours
·the flight could not be planned because it is over water
6. You are planning to conduct an IFR flight from Mackay to Longreach via Dysart and Barcaldine. The area forecast indicates BKN cloud with a base of 2500 feet throughout and a freezing level of 5500 feet. Select a statement which is correct regarding this flight
·the flight may be planned providing you remain below the freezing level
·the flight may be planned at any level providing you do not carry passengers
·the flight may not be planned
·the flight may be planned providing you do not cruise above 6000 feet
7. You are to conduct an IFR charter flight from Townsville to Emerald in VH-OZY. The altitude hold on the autopilot is unserviceable. Select the statement which is correct regarding this proposed flight
·you may conduct the flight to-day but the autopilot must be repaired within three days
·the flight may not be conducted unless the autopilot's altitude hold is repaired
·the flight may proceed providing the other control seat is occupied by another pilot who is endorsed on the type, holds at least a co-pilot instrument rating and at least a private pilot licence
·you may conduct the flight providing the forecast indicates that you will be able to remain in VMC
·the flight may proceed providing passengers are not carried

Sorry haven't got time to answer all your questions right now.

But the engine failure IMC should be the same as if you were doing a normal approach, pretend that the A/C does not know an engine is out.

45 days means you can only use the VOR, 35 days recency for ILS and 90 days all others

I don't think those answers on your exam are current heights

My DAP has VOR RWY 21: S-I VOR/DME 550 (507-2.8)

I would have said 550-MSL or (507-AGL) (ceiling) if not presented with the answers

If you are VMC then use can use circling but double check the 300ft Vis 2km rule for EFATO VMC

EFATO IMC use VOR RWY 21 cause you not current ILS (35 days)

Use S-I VOR/DME 550 (507-2.8) fly normal approach, no other way IMC

Good luck, bit late to get some answers for tomorrow but hopefully this still will help.
1. You are basically giving the answer here yourself. Surface temp 9 degrees,
first 1500 ft is without clouds so temperature drops 4.5 degrees. So at 1500 ft the temp is 4.5 degrees. In cloud with 1.5 degree per 1000 ft. Freezing level (0 degrees) takes another 3000 ft, so FZL is at 4500 ft.
2. standard take-off minima for VH-OZY are 300 ft and 2 km but you also need to consider returning when having an engine failure and being IMC. So check the approach minima for the most suitable approach having regard that you cannot use the ILS because of the 35 days recency requirement. Whatever the minima is, is the answer.
3. I would choose the last answer: 1 hour ICUS single pilot + instrument approach
In the last 90 days you need 3 hours instrument flight time which can be 1 hour actual and the other 2 hours on a synthetic trainer or 1 hour dual. ICUS instead of dual is also OK. And for single pilot you need 1 hour on a single pilot aircraft and 1 instrument approach.
This can all be found in CAO 40.2
4. See answer at question 2, same reasoning. Looking at the possible answers and the numbers in Jepps, these practice questions must be fairly old because the numbers don't match up.
6. VH-OZY does not have de-icing or anti-icing equipment. So I would choose the first answer: remain below freezing level, but offcourse above LSALT!
7. This is also in the CAO's (CAO 20.18): repair within 3 days
