Training in Adelaide
 

G'day folks........quick question for a friend of mine. He's 33 yrs old, PPL, 100hours approx, and considering training to CPL and seeking that golden carrot in the sky. He's currently self employed (something to do with roofs??), and with his tax breaks probably makes more than a Rex Captain. I've already told him that if he can continue to fly for fun (and be happy with that) then he should.........however i get the feeling that he has an itch that the roofing business just can't scratch ;)

So my question to any of you in the know is........which schools would suit a fella like him. He said that he went and spoke to Chucky (Bruce Hartwig Aviation), and was very impressed by their nice shiny fleet. I mentioned Dave Forsyth (is he still around??), as i knew him to be a fairly nice guy and comfortable school for guys off the street. Other than that i'm out of the loop at PF...........also not sure who's running Aldinga these days. Was always a nice place when Murray was in charge down there.......

Any help would be appreciated....and i'll pass it along to him.

12 months ago I was in an almost identical situation to 'your friend'. I earned circa $140k per year and I gave it all up to pursue a flying career. I am now 35.

I have recently passed my Commercial Pilots Licence and am now working towards my night and instrument ratings.

Many of my friends think I am mad - I probably am, but they do not feel the passion I have inside for flying and the challenge it presents. I suspect 'your friend' feels the same.

The best advice I can give to 'your friend' is to consider the changes that a change of career brings and the numerous sacrifices it brings and search within themselves to find out whether they have the committment to succeed regardless - believe me there are many sacrifices to be made.

Also Sth Aus pilot, is that Richard Higgins you are reffering too?? If so then that is a coup for Michael at Air south as Richard is a wealth of knowledge and experience.

There's basically only 4 schools in AD (apart from UniSA)

Bruce Hartwig's (Bruce actually works for FTA but left his name on the school)
Adelaide Flight Training Centre
Forsyth Aviation
Air South Training

Would highly recommend your friend visits each of those 4 schools, comparing rates and instructors. Don't be swayed by shiny new aircraft, it's all about instructional quality. I'm pretty sure each of those schools has an ATO that works for them. If you're still struggling to make up your mind, I'm sure you'll get a bunch of PMs advising you on the good and the bad:ok:

Ummmm it's not usually a golden carrot that you get in aviation.
Might be similar in form(long and round), but it's not a carrot.
