BOM's new TAF format and the CASA exams
 

What's the story with the new TAFs and the CASA exams. I plan on doing all of my exams in the next 3 months, should I perhaps do MET sooner than I'd planned just to avoid the new format. (Yeah yeah, I know I'll have to use it for work post-Nov 5th but I'd hate to stress over it for an exam.)

True, they're not big changes anyway (like changing the way that wind flows around a Low pressure system, now that would take a very coordinated effort).

TAF's to me ...if they are more than 4 lines long TAF means "Try Another Taf":E

OK now we have a TAF valid for 30hrs. Yet we still only have 4 temp groups and 4 QNH groups so is each group now divided into 7.5 hrs but the actual figure represents the mid point of the period of 3:45 into the period Or is that bit still for the first 12hrs of the 30hr period and having the actual figure as the midpoint 1:30 into the the period.... why they change this stuff is beyond me?:{:ugh:

The four temperature/QNH values are still for the first 12 hours only.

The only thing that's changed is that some TAFs are now valid for 30 hours. This means the DateTimeGroups at the start will always include the date.

(Oh, and we get to use BECMG (becoming), which is almost the same as FM (from), but a little different.)

I know its only a small change......

Hahaha, yeah that would be a sight to see... they'll probably do that at the same time they actually examine us on a theory of aerodynamics that hasn't been disproven :ugh:

Is that around the same time that they ditch the 727? Wow, I'd be so friggin' pissed off if they brought the change around and I'd started the 727. (Rumour is that the 727 was to be replaced by 2002:D). Onya CASA,

I loved the 727, not sure why the ATPL needs to retain it but hey the boffis at the top know best right?:ugh:
Taf's are for honest pilots, much like thieves, you keep locks on a door just for the honest thieves, they don't stop the determined & neither will 30 hr Taf's stop some pilots flying regardless of their at times dubious content.

In 1988, I was told to hold off doing my SCPL subjects because a new format based on the B767 would introduced in 1989.

The TAF format is another case of worlds best practice, great if you are flying International operations, hardly relevant to domestic operations.

Also noticed with our current TAF's the validity times are not really suited to domestic operations. Most Taf's used to be valid from 6am, 12pm, 6pm and 12am from memory, now they seem to be valid at unusual times.

They dont use the 727 because they think its up-to-date and relevant... for the purposes of the exercise, ie, making sure you understand how to make flight plans, navigate, and weight/balance/performance calculations, it hardly matters which aircraft they use. Its not as though you're doing a 727 endorsement.

Just like none of us ever flew an Echo Mark IV, either...

Or that Turbo T-Tail Lance that BAK was based around in the 1980's!

I get why they use the 727 and see no reason to change it. Certainly keep the Systems exam on up-to-date equipment but not a big deal for FPL or PERF.

I do miss my old Sunday picnics when I'd fly the Echo Mk IV up the coast.

Echo, Seagull, I seem to recall a Senior Mkxx somewhere in the fleet too, or am I delusional.

I suspect it was pre B727.
