I live 4kms to the north of runways 35 l and r.

The aircraft has come down into the back of a house garage in Lorna St Cheltenham very close to where I work. Lorna st is approx 1200m NW of runways 31L and R.

Cofirmed by eyewitness as 1 fatality . Police reporting they are looking for a second aircraft that may have been involved. Many golf courses in the area so hopefully , if there is a second aircraft involved it has landed safely.

priapism 27th Aug 2008 03:25

Mid air confirmed , as has the fact that the 2nd aircraft has landed safely nearby.

Plane crashes into Cheltenham house, pilot killed | Herald Sun

BREAKING NEWS: A PILOT has been hailed a hero after guiding his stricken plane away from a primary school before crashing.
The plane crashed into a garage and carport in Cheltenham after a mid-air collision. The pilot died at the scene but there were no reports of injuries on the ground.

Two planes are believed to have collided in mid-air just before 1pm. The other pilot is reportedly safe and well after landing his aircraft.

A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade hailed the pilot as a hero for guiding his plane away from a nearby primary school.

“We were very lucky that the pilot’s skill allowed him to land the aircraft where he did," she said.

“Had he crashed across the road he would have gone straight into Cheltenham Primary School.

“He managed to land the aircraft in such a way as to protect the public.”

“He was a bit of a hero.”

A Silver St resident was driving her car when the plane came down in front of them.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said her girlfriend noticed the troubled plane plummeting to the ground.

"It was on fire,'' she said.

"I'm pretty upset at the moment.''

She said although they were some distance from Moorabbin Airport it was always a concern.

"You always worry about it,'' she said.

Both planes and pilots were members of the Royal Victorian Areoclub, a club spokeswoman told the Herald Sun this afternoon.
Police also said they had "locked down" the Cheltenham East Primary School at the end of the street, but there are no fears for students or nearby residents.
A police spokeswoman said all students were safe and well.
Eyewitness Alexandra Mikhman told Bayside Leader she was stunned to see the plane plunge to earth.
''I was with my baby our for a walk I heard this noise and I thought some kids were flying a toy plane.

''Then I saw it drop into the garage and it burst into flames.

''It was going straight down. I thought it would manoeuvre up but it didn’t.

''I was in shock. It was so scary. I had my baby.

''I started screaming.‘’

A police spokeswoman said it was believed the two light aircraft clipped each other mid-air as they flew over the beachside suburb, near the Moorabbin Airport.

One plane landed safely nearby.

From news.com

A PLANE has exploded on the garage of a home after it clipped another aircraft in mid-air.

The pilot died in the Melbourne crash, which sent witnesses screaming and prompted the lockdown of a nearby school.

A police spokeswoman said it was believed two light aircraft clipped each other as they flew over the beachside suburb of Cheltenham.

One plane - identified by Moorabbin Airport manager Phil McConnell as a Piper Warrior with two people on board - landed safely nearby.

The other - said to be Cessna 150 - is believed to have crashed into the garage of a house on Lorna Street, killing the one person on board.

A Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman said there was an explosion when the plane hit the garage.

Victoria Police said the pilot of the plane was killed in the crash.

A police spokeswoman said the plane might have crashed into a shed or garage, but officers at the scene said it did not hit the house.

Around 30 firefighters were at the scene.

Eyewitness Alexandra Mikhman told the Bayside Leader she was stunned to see the plane plunge to earth.

''I was with my baby our for a walk I heard this noise and I thought some kids were flying a toy plane. Then I saw it drop into the garage and it burst into flames," she said.

''I was in shock. It was so scary. I had my baby. I started screaming."

The Herald Sun said the pilots of both planes were members of the Royal Victorian Areoclub.

The police spokeswoman said all students at a primary school at the end of the road were safe and well.

Cheltenham East Primary School was locked down and police were in attendance.

It was not immediately known if anyone was in the house when the plane crashed.

Condolences to the pilot's family, friends and colleagues.

Reading the comments from news.com.au by "Robert" is so dam painful. He is describing the pilots as hoons, joy riders and clowns. He uses the Red Bull race as an example of such hoonery!!

Brian nolan- Pilots are not Hoons... then tell me what is the Red Bull race in aid off... it is made up of Egos.. people who have watched top gun to many times and then fly like maniacs through targets. You can't tell me that that is responsible flying

Only a matter of time.... a lot of the pilots around that area are similar to street drag racers.... most of the time all the are doing is joy riding. I am surprised there have not been more deaths.

Capt Wally 27th Aug 2008 06:37

Damn, so sad to hear this, at least we know the facts as pilots the media & general public who rely on the media have no idea. This will no doubt give the EN airport group something to scream about. I can just hear them now, this could easily have happened at EN & it's only a matter of time!!! Sure it will happen nobody can never say it never will but this accident will continue to 'crash' for many months yet:bored:
Our hearts as pilots & aviation people in general go out to those effected directly & indirectly.
RIP & job well done mate, it was meant to be that yr demise may very well have saved many others.

Reading the comments from news.com.au by "Robert" is so dam painful.
The classic phrase from other boards on the Internet:

"Don't feed the trolls"

This 'Robert' guy is a complete tosser and either trying to antagonise people & build arguments or is an idiot so set in his way that nothing can sway him.
