Moorabbin Aviation Services - MECIR

G'day, long time reader first time poster :ok:

Was wondering if anyone could provide some info on completing a MECIR at MAS. Have heard lots of info on Peter Bini's AFT and MFT but don't know much about MAS.

Would love to do a MECIR in their Travel Air and their prices seem a lot better than the other two! Have done a search but couldn't find much on them so was wondering if anyone could give me first hand info on the quality of instructing and if it is a good place to complete a MECIR?

Thanks in advance!

Also I know this has been done to death, but also any other schools in Melbourne people have RECENTLY done their MECIR with their experiences and rough prices would be a great help in choosing the right school! Cheers

Gday simon, Dont know much about the school but the travel air is a nice machine. It is also my urderstanding that you have a 55 AND 58 baron endorsement lumped in with the travel air- I know it used to be that way anyhow. So that would be better than the senecas/semenholes/dutchies etc getting offered at other schools.

Good luck

G'day Simon,

Don't get too hung up on hourly rates. I did my MECIR with Steve Pearce at PBAFT between Sept - Dec 1996. I held a new CPL and my only IF experience was the minimum required for CPL issue. My total time was 248 hours in SE aeroplanes.

The training consisted of;

Simulator 7.2 hours

Piper Arrow 5.1 hours

Intro to the Seminole 1.3 hours

Seminole IF training 7.1 hours

Intro to Seminole assymetrics 1.3 hours

Seminole IF training w/assymetrics 13.6 hours

Initial Issue Flight Test 2.9 hours

As you can see the training was structured in a very professional manner and the hours were not dragged out.

I did a total of 23.3 hours in the Seminole, and the current $50/hr difference between PBAFT and MAS is only $1165 which is not a lot compared to the overall cost.

I have no experience of MAS, they may be very good. However Steve Pearce and PBAFT are excellent and the cost difference is negligible for such important training.

Don't worry too much about the Travelair endorsement either. Steve Pearce did my Travelair/Baron endorsement in 1.7 hours. It is not a big deal to add later.

I have just done my 11th CIR renewal with Steve and can vouch that the standard of training is as good as ever.

Mr.Milk: Yes I have heard the same thing, hence why I wanted to do it in the Travel Air and MAS offer this which is good!

CitationJet: Thanks for the breakdown. I've heard PBAFT and Steve Pearce are a great outfit and they are definitely an option! I agree, the cost is neglible compared to what the training is worth! But I am still very broke :ugh: and at the moment every dollar I can save counts :}

But I really thought someone on here would have some info or experiences with MAS? Anything would be great :ok:

If $1165 is the difference between doing it with Steve Pearce, or doing it with someone else, start saving!

If you're a smoker, quit now and put the money you would have spent into your Instrument Rating fund. If you smoke a pack a day, then in just over two months you'll have saved your $1165. I dont care if you tell yourself you'll start smoking again later - you're just taking two months off for a worthy cause.

If you forgo your daily cappucino and put the money you would have spent into the bank, you'll save that money in a little over six months.

If you do both, it will take you less than two months.

If you replace weekly going-out-drinking-til-you-get-drunk, with a quiet beer at home, you;ll save that money in ten weeks.

If you do all three, it will take you merely a month, of better prioritising the money you already have - and you will get your rating done with Steve Pearce, who is worth his weight in gold.

I guess in the grand scheme of things, the extra $1000-$1500 will probably be worth it...as I said before I have only heard good things about Steve and this thread just proves it again!

My next question then, what are the chances of getting him as your full time instructor? I can imagine he'd be in demand...

I will call them of course, but sometimes it is good to get un-baised first hand information :)

Also if you did it full time how long could it take? 1 month?

Thanks in advance

If you book an instrument rating through PBAFT, you'll get Steve. Yes, he's in great demand, so you may find you have enough time to save that extra thousand dollars before he can fit you in.

Full time will take you a month. Don't try to do it part time - you'll be making it harder for yourself.

He's certainly not the biggest bloke going around so I'd be tempted to say he is worth even more than his weight in gold! :ok:

If you can chase up an instructor called Paul Ciocia he is/was an excellent instructor and top bloke !!
Did my rating with him through PBAFT and Steve did my test, past first time and in minimum hours

Stormynights 24th Aug 2008 07:58

Dont tell him i said that !!
Ask him about the Goodley Sector 1

crank1000 25th Aug 2008 03:34

I know what that is

Paul just told me what the Goodley sector 1 is!

Stormynights 25th Aug 2008 06:00

it takes alot of skill

While talking about Steve Pearce, I should also mention Johnny Paizis who's now at MFT. They are both top-notch instrument instructors and were together at Bini's for over 20 years. Steve goes back much longer and is Oz's instrument guru - you will need to book a programme with him months in advance.
