Light Aircraft Purchase

Does anyone know the paperwork steps required, especially in relation to Title and Liens, for the purchase of a light aircraft in Oz?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

All the transfer forms are on the CASA site.

You can also request a liens statement from CASA - however, this does not guarantee clear title or clear of actual liens. Just clear of liens as far as CASA is aware.

Title search is still best done the old fashioned way.

CASA forms

Titles, as mentioned, the old fashoined way.

Reference aircraft purchase

Thanks for the replys. So to guarantee clear title a solicitor would do the search? Where do they access this information from? Thanks again for any advice.

If you look at the aircraft register on the CASA website, you can see who the operator is and who the registered owner is. Often the registered owner is a bank or leasing company, so that tells you it is encumbered.
A good solicitor should be able to draw up a bill of sale document that warrants it free of encumbrances. Boats are usually sold on that basis, and it's not often that buyers come unstuck. For an extra margin of safety you may need to put a broker between you and the seller and cop the extra commission. Get legal advice.
