Kununurra, broome or hedland/karatha??
 
Hi, Got MECIR test on monday after alot weather delays and finally can head up north. I have one free flight available to any destination that qantas serves so i thought i'd take a quick flight up and go knocking on some doors before i drive all that way. Can anyone suggest out of kununurra, broome, port hedland, or karatha or even darwin... which one i would most likely get a job at? from what some people have said where i did my training broome is the place to go. I currently have cpl/mecir, dg awareness, 180tt. and I have no issue with going more bush than these places.
I am also aware that the dry season will be ending shortly which is concerning me a little in getting a job up there.
Also should I call ahead and try make an appointment with the cp of some of the company's of the chosen destination?

Do some ringing around in Broome mate, last time I was there, there was a number of jobs going.

Some guys that start at king leos go to Polar for twin time the boss of King Leos and Polar are good mates.

Do polar usually take low time guys? Or is it a place people go to after they have done a season up north?

Goodluck with looking up there, I have been trying to find my first job for about a month now, Nothing hapening in Kununurra got an email saying from Slingair try Feb/Mar. gave all the other places a call. I believe Bushflight are looking but I have not heard to much (positive) about them.

So much for the pilot shortage. Saying that tho usually persistance pays off so goodluck.:ok:

Its a place that not many pilots go to as Broome is just up the road Polar are always looking for pilots as you do alot of hours and alot of twin time people are usualy in the company for around a year. They also have a C208 so if you do hang around for longer then mormal you would be endorsed on it. I would say its one of the few places that give pilots a go with low hours.

When I was working for King Leo's (albeit about 6 years ago now) they only had singles. I'm pretty sure that hasn't changed.

Think they just have singles try broome air services they also have a kingair online.

Hey thanks for the reply's, I had a look at polar's web site, it has info regarding pilot applications and they want 850tt. It seems i will most likely try broome aviation and king leo's.

Arnellis, They say they want 850TT but they have employed pilots with bare cpl mecir etc... No harm in trying

Hi all, not wanting to start an entirely new thread about prospective jobs in the far north west, I will try to ask a few questions on this one without hijacking it completely!
What sort of questions should a newbie be asking the prospective employer? Certainly finally making the transition from paying to fly to being paid to fly it excellent in itself but it shouldn't negate the need to ask questions before acceptance of a new role, I'm not talking about knocking back any offers I may get, but more so finding out as much as I can before jumping on board. What type of questions should I be asking and what should I be taking note of when I am having a look at the operators setup? Conditions of a/c?, pay rate?, expected flying hrs?, extra responsibilities? Cheers for any info... :cool:

With Clark at Polar let him know you dont mind cleaning the odd plane and you will look after his aircraft and you dont mind the odd drink or two with the other pilots he is looking to see if you fit in. Your able to start maybe the next day and you dont mind working weekends. All the pilots that have worked in Polar over the last 10 years have gone to either the airlines or regional airlines so being in Hedland wont harm your prospects.

from what i hear, broom is pretty expensive to live. but i never been there so i wont state that as a fact.
yes there is plenty off work up north at the moment.
and the right time off the year to start for a fresh cpl as you dont have to worry about the wet season yet.

If you cant get a job up north maybe it has not entirely to do with your cpl but with the atitude you have?
changes are that if you rock up wearing a pair off shiny ray ban glasses in a uniform that the operator will sent you next door. Be profesional but don't think that you are gods gift to aviation now you got your cpl. it wont get you anywere.:ugh:

The questions i would ask an operator.
whats the progress in the company like?
can i help you out in the office if needed?

no point to me asking what the wages are like. it wont be anything to retire on.

fair enough you ask what the hours are like. and what kinda work the company das.
eg tourism or charter or both.

For those off you who really want a challange (not just flying wise) NT is the way to go.
sometimes living remote (i am talking communities) and days off non flying will be part off it. if you like fishing, not a bad place to be either.
and than there is the wet season with the most impressive CB's you will see.
If there is anybody who has a work ethic. who dasnt mind putting in the hard yards. dasnt mind doing paperwork (welcome to aviation) dasnt mind washing his/her plane once a week.
than sent me a pm with your details. maybe i can help.

If you rather just rock up to work, hop in your plane fly it, than park it up and go home and winch about you not getting enough flying it is to hot to dusty or to many fricken flies. than dont worry.
