I have a question hoping someone might be able to answer in regard to the Qantas Link traineeship I have checked the numerous threads and use search engine but with no luck:confused:

The medical/physical that QF perform..……..if I hold a class 1 medical but had to do several tests to get the color vision part passed. Will this go as a black mark against my name?? Will I have to resit the practical lantern test? I can’t see anything in the color plates that the DAME gives but I had no worries with the series of lights the tower flashed.

Any info would be greatly appreciated:ok:

QF require you see a DAO (???) designated aviation opthamologist and have a full set of tests, including field of vision test irrespective of whether you have one for your class one. I'd see the same opthamologist you saw last time as he knows your history, limitations and capabilities.If you can hold a class one I wouldn't be worried though. :ok:

In the same boat as you, passed the FALANT though:ok:

A few weeks ago I was speaking to the head Dr at QF and said all you need is the paper work to show you passed the test. So by your post Im assuming you passed the Farnsworth, then you'll be fine.
For anyother medical issues Id just simply call the QF medical section...thats how i found out!;)

flying_drumman, I failed the Farnsworth lantern test but pasted the practical signal test (Tower flashes a series of lights from different distances) I do have the original paper work from that test. But by the sounds of it I should be right as along as I bring the paper work along to the show the QF doctor. Well one can only hope anyway:bored:

Interested to know when you did your original CV test. I went through in 97, failed the Ishihara and Farnsworth, I then had to take a lantern test at the Melbourne School of Optometry which I passed. I'm not sure what the test was called, just wondering if you were offered the option to do that test instead of reading the tower lights?

I was given the choice of the practical test or going to the Melbourne and going through their series of tests. In the end I was advised that I would have a better chance of passing the tests in Melbourne because they would actually see the exact colors I couldn’t see and the extent of my vision issues. I called up the tower at ysbk on a wet day and asked if they could flash a few colors at me from the taxi way, the guys up there were top blokes and were happy to help. I could see them with no worries at all so I just gave the practical test a go.:)

Tower test
 
I too failed the plates in the Doc's office and the Farnsworth. I was then told to do the test at the Melbourne School of Optometry, where I missed out by one light. The Dr then preceded to tell me to find another job. :mad:

Not giving up I then got a chance to do the practical test with the tower lights. The tower guys (MB) set up a practice one day after work and when I got to the test I nailed every light. :)
I was later told that the light in rooms of the test can affect what your vision and hence give a neg result. If you where glasses that to can affect the result. My experience only though.

So I would recommend the tower test if it gets down to last chance etc...but take you time and do a practice with your local tower. They generally aren't fussed about doing it because you either can do it or not.;)

From that test I was cleared of any restriction on my license. I now fly an A330 as FO to many ports overseas with no difficulty other than getting through sim checks etc... but the colour vision is not an issue.

I currently advise a flying school in MB on other students with this issue and am happy to help others not go through I had to. :ok:

Feel free to PM me if I can help on the tips on getting though the tests.

BTW QF don't care about colour problems if you have passed the CASA test etc..:ok:

Oh I when back to the School of Optometry to tell the DR what I though of her. := Hopefully she didn't put off too many other guys. :suspect:

I am pretty sure the test has to be done at night. I wasn’t given any choice of a day slot but this may have been due to traffic reasons I am not 100% sure. Your best option is to give your nearest tower a call on a windy or wet Sunday arvo and ask them if they can flash a few different combo's of colours and go from there. As many have stated in other threads there is many different forms/degrees of colour vision so the easiest way is to have a practise test. Even better if you know the security guys and they let you jump in the ute and go out to 300m and 800m on the taxi way ect. (real test conditions then)

Does any one know, what are the required standards for Color vision for QLink pre employment medical these days?

I am Color vision deficient but hold a Class 1 medical with no restrictions. I did the signal test with the tower ages back.
