Australasian Jet

Hey all,

I'm after any information the good citizens of pprune are willing to give regarding Australasian Jet.

What are they like to work for?
Where do you start/how much exp do they want?
What's progression/conditions like?

I eventually want to get into corporate charter (along the lines of execujet/hawker, not too keen on being owned by one person though!:ok:), would this be a good way into that, seeing as thats what they do at the top end of it?

Thanks in advance,

Cap'n

Cap'n Arrr 28th Feb 2008 06:42

Thanks to those who PMed me.

Anyone else have an info they're willing to share?

Mr Milk 28th Feb 2008 09:23

Hey capn... I know a guy who went there as a fresh pilot with a bit of time but not much multi. He was quick to progress up the ladder and is now onto the kingair and citation- didnt take too long. All he can say about them is good, and they have a fairly solid rep for paying well too.
equipment seems nice too, missing a pa-42 now though......

bilbert 28th Feb 2008 22:33

They only employ casual. (See Ad. fri for ASP). No fly - No pay. Training on your time at your expense. No pay for time on paperwork or for helping out in operations. Limited supervision at remote bases. Wannabe wonderland?.

alexthepilot 29th Feb 2008 00:00

gday guys im also curious about working for this company if any1 could also send me some details on them it would greatly appreciated.

thanks alex

Harry Cooper 29th Feb 2008 02:19

Might want to check your facts Bilbert. There is a casual position going in the Alice but the majority of positions are fulltime. Out of 60 or so pilots only a handful are casuals.

Di_Vosh 29th Feb 2008 02:37

Facts?

G'day Harry,

Speaking of Darwin only, the RPT guys are all full-time. Only a few of the Charter guys are full-time; the rest are casual, including most of the remote guys.

DIVOSH!

Important

This is important. Many young pilots have found out the hard way that their new job only pays for the hours they fly, and there aren't enough of those to make a decent weekly wage.
This has been very common in the NT and I was told that a particular Alice Springs charter company only had one full time pilot and he was the ops manager. All the others were casual. And the aeroplanes were rented.

Fairbairn 29th Feb 2008 10:17

Dont go there

If you get a phone interview ask them:

Why have 11 of the 14 senior pilots at Ausjet Darwin have left since November? Only 4 of the 11 left due to a better job: one left for the same job (two places down the apron); 6 left because they’d had a gut full!

Why did they leave?

Was it because of the idiot in Ops? Couldn't organise the proverbial piss-up in a brewery!

Or was it because of the *Inspired* leadership from the W family? For those that don’t know: Dad (for privacy reasons, let’s call him “Mal”) is the manager, Mum is in accounts and the 17 year old school boy works in Ops! Too bad that of the three, the 17 year old is the most professional (crapped on the Ops manager, too).

“Mal” is well known for abusing pilots: If you like to be sworn at on the phone for something that's not your fault, come work for Ausjet Darwin.

Or maybe it’s because “Mal” promises lots, and delivers less. Like the guy who came up to the NT because he was promised the Gove Senior Base position! When he arrived he was told "No, we'll put you on as a casual pilot in DN on the 210". He left a week later.

Or was it maybe the "safety culture there?" (The less said, the better).

Or was it their great planning? Ask them how many of the 11 have been replaced since November? The answer is less than 1

There are plenty of better operators in Darwin.

Chadzat 29th Feb 2008 10:43

Fairbairn you may be close to the mark, but it sounds like you have an almighty chip on your shoulder there mate!

Fact is the job is for the Alice base and even though the Alice base is part of 'AusjetNT' it is run completely seperately.

Commenting only on the Alice base, if you want to work with a great, close knit bunch of people, fly lots of hours and progress relatively quickly then you could do a lot worse that Ausjet. It has its issues but name me a GA company that doesn't.

As a guide not long ago you could get an invite down to the MEN base after 18 months and 1500TT and 500multi command under your belt.

Im sick of people replying that dont know F all...
and people that have obvious chips on their shoulder.
Sure there might be crewing problems but name a top end GA company that hasnt lost bulk senior crew in the last six months. The grass is always greener on the other side when your in GA. Captain Arr check your PMs

That person is now with tiger.:D

justapilot 1st Mar 2008 10:57

Ausjet :)

Well I for one think they are a "bloody good mob" .. Yes I do work for them and I have certainly worked for a lot worse.
They have a good mix of aircraft in the fleet and very good progression.:ok:

Definately one of the better larger G.A. companies:D

Outkast 2nd Mar 2008 00:07

Fairbairn,

Good on you for telling it like it is.

Ausjet, Golden Eagle, Chartair, Direct Air etc....... All these companies are the same. You have to jump through heaps of bull**** to get anywhere.

Biatch,

You are right about GA , but what is wrong with expecting more from companies that you work your arse off for? Why should pilots have to tolerate so much crap. I wish pilots could stick together and stand up against the crap. They don't cos most of them, all they care about is themselves and their career. So the only choice you have as a pilot is ultimately to leave.

justapilot,

I am guessing you haven't been there very long.:}

Chadzat 2nd Mar 2008 00:14

Outkast,

Am I right in assuming you have worked for each of those companies mentioned- hence you are in a position to comment. Or are you just sprouting about things you have 'heard' around the traps.

Outkast 2nd Mar 2008 00:41

No, Chadzat, I haven't worked for all those companies. I think I would be institutionalized if I had ;). I have worked for 2 and I have very close friends who have work for the others. I do recognize that things can change very quickly in a company due to change in CP or management - so one person's ****ty experience one year can change to someone else really enjoying their time with a company the following year. Of course whether you are based at Darwin or Groote or Alice can make a huge difference as well.

It does seem however, that the majority of GA companies constantly try and push pilots in some way or another to do things which are unsafe or illegal and I know for a fact that those 4 companies ( oh yes I could list more if you want) have pushed pilots to do dodgey things, at some time or another. And this is unacceptable regardless of how moody the ops manager is or what little games they like to play.

I should be fair and acknowledge that there are indeed some good things about Ausjet and yes being at a remote base like Alice would be the best option. Just because there are some good things about the company it doesn't mean that some people can't express their unpleasant experiences - particularly when it comes to safety. And just because most GA companies have a questionable safety culture, why should we accept it??????

tipan13 2nd Mar 2008 00:49

I worked for AusJet for a few years.
All I can say is that the company certainly tried to do the best they could.
The aircraft we good and the flying was some of the best one could ask for.
Progression.......no other company in GA could offer anything like ausjet. From a Navajo to a Citation driver in 3 years. No paying for endos just a handshake to commit to a return of service.
There are many of us out there that have Ausjet to thank for our Airline gigs.

Fairbairn....... Time you grew up. If you dont like that place- leave no need to slag people off.

If your a good bloke or chick and your a good operator Ausjet is better than most GA companies in Aus

megle2 2nd Mar 2008 06:33

Rumour around that there has been a recent change in ownership at Ausjet.
Any legs on this?

flyitboy 2nd Mar 2008 09:15

AusJet can't be that bad, their still in business after a lot of years!
They fly Pollies around as well as various other Govt contracts so if they where in anyway unscrupulous then am sure someone would have had some Govt influence over them to do it right.

Fair bunch of guys from what I have heard over the years.
Not sure who the CP is these days but the last guy RP was a good guy.
