Is ASIC killing off GA PPL?

A "peak" GA aviation body encouraged the ASIC on the basis of them being a monopoly accredited with issuing them. They failed to fight the idea or at least contain it to it's original concept that was sent to everyone in two small colour brochures.

Within these brochures it defined certain areas that were SECURITY RESTRICTED ZONES within a SECURITY CONTROLLED AIRPORT.

These zones were clearly marked as pasenger terminals, fuel depot's navigation aid installatiuons etc.

Places where no PPL really had any business going anyway. A few yellow lines painted on the tarmac would have sufficed as idiot proof identification of these areas.

Local Governments were then advised that they would only get Federal funding if they declared ALL of the AIRSIDE of the airport a SECURITY RESTRICTED ZONE.

A Double cross for GA and a ransom /reward by DOTARS for Local Government.

In typical fashion they grabbed the cash and built fences that managed to keep some kangaroos out at some country airports with a RPT service once or twice a week.

To date there is no evidence that this action has prevented or deterred any acts of terrorism.

That is how the ASIC helped ruin GA especially the private sector who just gave up because it was all just too bloody hard.

Oh, and charge everyone a fee helped this exercise in absolute futility. Even Hitler, Stalin or Mao never charged for identity "papers".

I note a few posters here complaining about the ASIC who are members of that very same organisation that helped promote this fiasco. The key player still ensconced on his thrown of power. Take the matter up with him.

It's too late to reverse things and the best you could hope for is a "rollback" to what was promised in the brochures.

But then again, who wants small GA on RPT airports anyway except a few "silvertails" who own or operate light aircraft. Yes.... I'm sure a Federal Labor Government would support them.

Sorry for the thread drift. Now back to RA-Aus jets.

People have been complaining about the death of GA and blaming one thing or another since well before I was a pilot.

GA is an optional extra. It's not a necessity. People use a disposable income to fly privately. Make it fun and people will come back to do it again. Blame the CASA, blame the price of fuel, blame whatever. When I turn up to fly from a local airport and an aircraft isn't back yet, or I have to wait an hour or more, or it doesn't have enough fuel, or the paperwork isn't complete yet, or it's not clean, or...fill in the blanks, and I have to remedy the situation to fly, then it's not fun. Combine that with having to swipe a credit card for this, that and everything else, planning on up-to-date charts 2 months in advance, getting security clearances, getting hit for nav charges after the fact and it's no longer fun but a chore. I did that when I was 20 something. I don't tolerate it anymore.

This aspect of GA hasn't changed. The trouble is the market for other options for spending the disposable income has. There are way more options available these days and GA sits back, doesn't change and continues to whine about it.

"pasenger terminals"

Oops need a cr*p

"fuel depot's"

Need some go juice to get out of here

"Places where no PPL really had any business going anyway."

Interesting way of thinking

Jeezus mate.

OK you onviously didn't get the brochures.

Airside of the terminal areas.

Fuel depots as opposed to fuel bowsers and Nav aid installations,

Where most private pilots have no business "swanning" around anyway.

Even now if you have a red ASIC try wandering around amongst the jets at KSA and see how you get on.

For anybody, (even is deaf but not blind), who is interested, I'll get the brochures out, copy and fax them if you PM's me.

OZBUSDRIVER. Never.

medical costs tad more ( class one though )

king_daniels, Nice work,

An initial issue medical cost me more than 200$.
Here is the details-

Some place on Ipswich Rd, Brisbane
Aviation Medical Original- $270
ECG- $45
Hear Tst $37
Gst- $27
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total- $ 379

Again close to Ipswich Rd, Brisbane

Eye Test $176 ( I guess inc GST )

Again somewhere close to Ipswich Rd, Brisbane

Blood test- $60
( not sure as no one knows cost, but company ( OML Pathology ) on the phone thinks about whats stated, and the nurse taking the blood thinks more than what is stated, and the accounts department thinks, but not sure, thinks less than what is stated, even though its been done and the bill is on the way to my house

CASA Fee- $70
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total $ 685
( Convert that to NZ and its $890NZ )

That’s to gain a class one medical. Not a class 2 or 3. But, if the 18 year old was serious about flying and suggested this to the CFI, Instructors, Career advisor, other pilot, Internet, would all recommend getting a Class 1, so as not to be disappointed later on when.. etc etc..

The books etc inc- ERSA, AIP Vol. 1, charts etc come to around 1100$ to get started( inc amend., and again they would all probably recommended, and therefore the 18 year old could possible be obliged to buy them all very early on.

Jabawocky, the above post by King_Daniels was actually from THIS forum and was posted by "Mention1." It was later reproduced on the other forum and then used back here AGAINST GA by King_Daniels!

Jabawocky 11th Mar 2009 04:07

That's recycling for ya! :ok:

When I did my training, a CPL with SCPL subjects cost about the same as four years of university. What's the comparison these days?

(It's not a trick question...I honestly don't know.)
