RAAF Pilot aptitude test
 

Hi all,
I am going off to have a chat with the RAAF in a couple of weeks, and someone mentioned aptitude test...:sad: Any hints or tips on what to expect? should I be nervous?
Also any thoughts on RAAF as a career move? there seem to be alot of guys leaving at present, is there something we on the outside aren't seeing or just a changing of the guard?

Try the Australian Air Force Cadets Defence Force Careers forum. You'll find lots of stuff on there about the current selection processes.

I assume you've looked at defencejobs.gov.au and gone to the ADF Pilot Selection part of the site?

At the time it was being replaced with a computer based system with a bunch of interesting tests. Telling you exactly what was in them would take the fun out of the day :)

But basically you want to be good at...
- Basic mental arithmetic (e.g. anything up to 12x12 or 144/12 in your head know that 1/8th and 0.125 are the same thing)
- Short term memory items (remember hot girls phone number until you find a pen... most people can remember 8 digits, can you remember 2 girls or will you be forced to pick?)
- Sequences (I saw the master caution light come on, then I saw the right low fuel light come on, then I saw the left low fuel light come on, then I saw the fuel low pressure light come on, then I saw the master warning light come on.... can you remember 8 at a time, dropping off the first one as a new one is added)
- Good hand eye coordination - they had a game of fly the FA18 on their website a while ago, how many squares can you make it through

I don't believe too many guys are leaving at present.........I wouldn't expect this to change too much in the coming years (what, with the impending deflationary depression which is around the corner {for the benefit of superfrozo and exDouglasDriver!}).

The RAAF is a fantastic outfit for flying operations and flying training........certainly light years ahead of the airline industry in many respects. BUT - it is still a large, frustrating, inefficient, mismanaged and misprioritised government organisation. If you are the sort of person who doesn't give a toss about the latter, as you MUST fly military aircraft at all costs, then the RAAF is for you. If you are contemplating joining as a cheap way to the airlines, then don't even bother - unless you are way, way up the end of the bell curve of natural ability, you won't have the motivation to endure the endless pounding your soul will take throught the training process.

I have to say, the RAAF is the only path I'd recommend to my son should he want to become a pilot.

That may be you're first hurdle.

Will probably be a requirement to be able to do a good job of "the dance of the flaming arsehole", for display purposes, with the F111's retired. Better get some practice in.

I have a quick question I hope u can help me with. In your post you say that in the first and second aptitude tests there is "english comprehension". By this do u mean the "Foot is to Leg as Hand is to a, head. b, arm" etc or do u mean reading passages and then deducing the most likely statement?

I also plan on going through this process when I finish school next year. I hope you can answer a couple of questions for me.

1. How difficult are the coordination tests? Do you know of anything similar that can be used for practice?

2. Do you go through this whole process at before you join if you are go to ADFA then apply for the pilot selection? or is it done when you apply for flight screening?

I took the test mid last year.. The positions you are offered depends on the results of your test, and from what i remember pilot is at the top 90-100%. I was offered the pilot position but the raaf representative was trying to get me to apply for radar technician or something.

I know this thread is over two years old, but I just want to correct this. The test you're referring to here sounds like the YOU test. It is a test to determine what positions suit you depending on your aptitude and education. You would NOT be offered a pilot position upon completion of the YOU test - you have to pass a lot more tests to get that (hand-eye coordination tests, OSB Panel Interview, etc).
