Forstaff paying peanuts for QF management stuff up
 
Had a word today to a Forstaff employee regarding the positions that QF are trying to fill at Avalon,Lame rate is $41(the 25% loading for a casual position is loaded into this rate) per hr plus allowances ,as a contractor,they must be kidding ,they have only had 4 people take up the position out of the 450 people that Qf let go last year,do they not realize there is a skilled labor shortage in this country and in this field.Wake up fools:ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh::}

I don't think there is a skilled labor shortage, it's just that people don't want to work at avalon.The airport is one big cow paddock located in the middle of woop woop.

I also have heard that the rate is $41 per hour. And remember, that’s to work a shift that attracts an average loading of around 25%. Take that out of the equation and you’re back to around $32 per hour. And that’s to work as a LAME, certifying for up to 10 AME’s that you’ve probably never met before. As a comparison, AME contractors at BNE H3 are getting $35 to $36 per hour, they don’t certify, they don’t order parts, they don’t raise paperwork, they just do their eight hours and go home. The shift is Monday to Friday, days one week, arvos the next week. Weekends off. Too easy! They also get accom and a shared car! Also, their job is just as secure as a permanent employees! The word is, their contracting agency negotiated a minimum 38 hours per week for them. The boss is too scared to stand the contractors down when work is thin because of the worry that they will find another contract and not come back. What a sweet deal. Makes $41 at Avalon for a LAME look like the joke it is. Funny thing is, when the fellow I know politely refused the offer for a position in Avalon due to $41 not being enough, the Forstaff guy said – that’s strange, you’re the first person that’s said the money is not good enough. I find that very hard to believe. Avalon will struggle to get this work done on time and on quality.

A contractor sheetie left Bne H3 today bound for John Holland Melb. He is getting over $40 per hour. A Lame should be up around $60 per hour. The $41 per hour is part of the skills shortage con.

going of what other trades are getting in other industries,and what Lame's are getting in Europe the rate should be a least $80 per hr:=

Talkwrench, I guarantee your mate is not the only one that has told them the money is not eneough.

Forstaff have approached me twice in the last few weeks. I told them I was interested in the work but only if they increased their rate significantly.

4 rehired people out of 450 recently redundant speaks for itself!!

Numbskull, yep I hear ya. No surprises there. I guess I could hardly have expected the Forstaff recruiter to say – oh dear, another prospective LAME not happy with the pay, I guess we’ll have to adjust the rate, what with their being such a shortage of engineers in the marketplace. Oh well, I’m sure Forstaff will fight gallantly on, looking for that ideal candidate out there somewhere. 457 visas here we come. I’d just advise people to avoid flying on the first few sectors that those 743’s fly on, ex maintenance. At least until Base Maint gets em sorted out.

there not going to get them from Asia considering that they are paying more over there than here for LAME's , i think the starting wage in Malaysia for a 744 license is $55 to $ 60 US dollars per hr +++++:\

Are these low wages part of the cunning plan though? We can't find enough people to service the a/c and therefore we must send it o/s? Ultimately they still win! :mad: :(

No they won't send the planes overseas if they can help it.

They'll bring the overseas workers here on 457 visas. Not because there is a shortage of qualified engineers in Aust but because there are better opportunities in Aust for those qualified engineers.

Either way, with the money QF are offering, the Chinese can have it.

No MRO wants to take on the 743's!
 
Keg, as I understand it, the 743’s WERE meant to get done overseas in the first place. The story goes that QF asked for a quote from SIAEC and they weren’t happy with the price and started looking elsewhere around the world for a better price. When they couldn’t find anyone to do it, they returned to SIAEC and said – We will accept your quote now, please fix our planes. SIAEC said – sorry we no longer have any slots available. The result: No one in the whole world wants to do them! This left QF in the poo and that is why they are trying to get them done in Avalon by asking their loyal old ex Sydney HM LAME’s to come on down and bang a couple out for old times sake. Unfortunately it appears that the majority have found meaningful employment outside the industry since closure and it would take a substantial amount of money to get them back. $41 per hour appears to be nothing more than salt into the wound. Anyone else have a different take on the situation?
