Transporting Cars by Air
 

Just saw on Airline a Ferrari 456GT being loaded into the forward hold of an Emerites aircraft at LHR. Becuse of its size, it had do be driven into the hold.

I thought a cars fuel tank had to be empty, and all fuel lines drained etc as per the DG's manual.

Wonder what the excess baggage charge was.

When I went from Oz to NZ in 1982, my 1981 Commodore S/wagon went over in the hold of the same 747SP into Wellington as I did. I had to remove the front and rear bumber bar, and cut about 150 mm off the exhaust pipe. QF put it on a pallet with the rear wheels about 150 mm higher than the front wheels and slid it sideways into the hold.

I assume QF drained the fuel tank, as I have a vague recollection of having to put some fuel in it to drive it away from the aerodrome.

geez Doc, must have been a flash commodore, understand a ferrari but an '81 commodore? Did it have a forked tail and a beechcraft badge?

Wasn't the Super Guppy designed to carry cars and pax, like a car ferry back some time ago?

If I had a car that was less than a year since being brand new, I'd take it with me too!

Oh for the Armstrong-Whitworth AW650-222 Argosy. Military aircraft but very successful on the trans English Channel service!

While it is preferable to not have a full tank it need not be completely drained. It will travel as Class 9 dangerous goods either way.

Well at least it SHOULD be class 9 DG.

I believe the big Antonov took lot's of cars from Japan to NZ, and I think it's not uncommon when NZ needs more cars.
Australia does not allow such things.

Air Freight?
 

Those would be some seriously expensive jap imports! considering you can put one on the ship for around 2k(depending who you know) and see it at the wharf 2weeks later.

Back in the days when Qantas flew from Brisbane to Christchurch, saw a Holden being loaded in the hold of a 767. loaded up on a pallet, very much the same way Doc said his was.

I guess if you really, really need the car transported ASAP, and are prepared to pay for it, then you can do it.. But I don't think you'll be able to do it with today's airlines, flying 737s or A320s across the ditch.

But hey, could you imagine the fees Jetstar could charge you, just to tell you that you can't do that?? :}

Didnt do anything to Leyland :yuk: development cars when we took em from England to the Fiat test track in Turin.

SH - It was a stock standard, 12 mth old 1981 Commodore Wagon. Its transportation to NZ was paid for by my new employer under their relocation allowances. I think it was flown to NZ (along with the rest of my household effects) because at that time there was no direct sea link between Brisbane and NZ. My recollection is that it cost about $1000 to fly it to NZ - and the insurance for the trip (2 days cover only) was also about $1000. I was going to skip the insurance until I found out that Qantas had dropped a Porsche the week before.

Piggy Muldoon was the PM of NZ at the time and he had 100% duty on all imported cars (ie all cars). Mine came in duty free. In 1982, my 81 Commodore wagon was the flashest (and most expensive) car in the carpark at work. I drove it for 4 years and sold it for about $3000 more than I had paid for it - in Ozzie dollars. Paid cash for a new Falcon with the proceeds on my return to Oz - should have bought a Datsun engine Commodore cause that Falcon was complete crap!

Funny you mentioned emirates.
Every summer in London there is at least 50 cars with arab plates cruising around. Even the Sheik of Dubai has his 2 veyrons there ! Guess its not too expensive if you own the airline.....

Isn't there a Bristol Freighter at Wangaratta that used to carry cars accross the English channel from Lydd if I recall correctly? regular 20 minute or so trip. I'm sure they used to drive on/drive off in those days. Guess 9G nor anything else was an issue then.

Seen at Malaga some 20+ years ago, King Khalid's fleet (in Saudia colors) included -- besides a 747, GIII, and a couple 707s -- a Hercules to carry the royal limos. :ok:

I'll see your Commodore and raise you an EC130! In order to get our new EC130 delivered to us asap we had it air freighted from the factory in France instead of shipping it. I believe it cost us an additonal US$20,000 to get it here in a few days instead of a few weeks. It's still taken nearly five months to go from this......
