Emergency in Hamilton?

Hi everyone,

Heard over the radio's today about a situation happening in Hamilton today around 2:30pm or so. Possibly involving a CTC aircraft with 2 instructors on board, but I'm not certain.

Anyone have news?

Cheers

Probably another Twinstar with another engine failure, seems common enough!

Seems to be a few emergencies in the tron lately.

I was up with a mate in a lighty the other day and the tower declared a full emergency for an N registered Malabu with comms failure. If you're wondering (as I did at the time) why they would declare a full emergency for mere comms failure, I think they must have looked at the worst possible scenario that it would be a wheels up or something like that. Either way, was interesting to watch/listen to.

It is up to the pilot to declare the appropriate emergency state...ATC have guidelines to follow if the pilot is unable or unsure of what state to declare. I won't comment further about that particular occurance other then to say that a FULL EMERGENCY was entirely appropriate. It's my view that is is better to have too many rather than too few services available!!

ooooh - go on, comment further! What happened?! :ooh:

Yeah, I was out on the deck at the aero club when that was going on. I saw him do a low pass down the runway with gear down. I assumed it was for the tower to check that the gear looked down. I didn't realise there was a comms failure involved as well. He landed Ok and taxied straight over to the local maintenance hangar.

My kids thought it was quite exciting to see four fire appliances and an ambulance standing by with lights flashing.

that n reg malibu had a complete electrics failure and he was talking on a hand held radio - with terrbile range i will add to! He actually did not know exactly where he was at first as the back up gps would not go either. all atc had was a primary target - he was up at fl160 when all this happened.
I think he was totally nordo for a while before he was raised, by relaying to control.

as for the twin star - is the one that got hit by lightening flying again. apparently one wing tip got blowen off?!

WTF????

Do NOT get me started with this one...

(and, can I ask what an "N" reg is without getting slammed?)

tinpis 7th Sep 2007 02:56

At FL160 exactly what bit of Kiwi couldnt he see? :hmm:

kiwiblue 7th Sep 2007 03:26

KC -N reg is anything registered in the USofA

just like NZ = ZK, Aus = VH... there was a thread on all this last week!

Cypher 7th Sep 2007 03:27

N Registered - Country of Registration is America.

kiwi chick 7th Sep 2007 03:33

KB :O :O :O oooops... I must have been working last week :ok:

I can't think how else a thread could have got past my eye. ;)

Thanks! Have seen the odd jet with "N" but I didn't click that that's what was meant.... why are there so many here? Training?

KC :)

tail wheel 7th Sep 2007 04:15

KC. Why so many N registered aircraft and Americans in New Zealand you ask?

Probably an attempt to raise the average IQ of both countries!

:}

kiwi chick 7th Sep 2007 04:18

Hahaha!! :D

I've had that coming for a while, haven't I...?! ;)

Raised IQ'S

Shame a past NZ prime minister who's nickname had a "porcine" flavour used this line already when discussing kiwis flocking to OZ

showing my age ??

Well, quite a few visiting aircraft from the States explain the number of N registered aircraf here.
There are 3 that come to memory that are based here.. a certain Global Express, F2000 and F900 at AA..
Reason is that it is cheaper in certain aspects to keep the aircraft N registered as maintenance now comes under FAA regs instead of NZ regs. If you are using the aircraft for only Pt 91, it makes sense to keep it on the N register and therefore abide by the FAA rules.
You now don't need to do a complete C of A check and also it makes reselling the aircraft easier. (To enter the a/c on to ZK register.. you damn well need to take it apart and allow the NZ CAA to inspect it..)
However you also need a FAA approved engineer and approved FAA repair station.
This also means you cannot do any charters in NZ, well.. your allowed one a month... as this opens a nasty can of worms that every corporate pilot in the world runs away from... cabotage...
(no.. it's not a form of coleslaw...) :}

Its also handy for those who had trouble with maintaining an NZ medical.

Emergency Central!!

NZHN has been emergency central recently...including...

- solo CTC cadet taken taken sick at the controls
- Robin (CTC I think) declaring emergency with jammed brake
- the Malibu with electrical failure
- the Robin with electrical sparks emanating from the mag switch
- the 172 that lost comms and vacated the circuit

I think all resulted in emergencies declared, but with happy endings

Been a pretty interesting on the frequency over the last couple of weeks!
