There is a shortage of good avionics techs.

If you have not been on another planet or totally out of the loop, remember if you are a pilot the sometimes grubby guy who signs your snags or maintenance release is a LAME. a good experienced one with a few categories and who knows what he is doing is like rocking horse do-do.
He is a fast disappearing species due to employer apathy, CASA frog dung, and dare I say it, myself included, just simply getting rather long in the tooth and more interested in where the fish are biting, than the latest wonder go jet with all the latest and greatest of a pilots wet dreams.
Cheers, Propstop

So what can an avionics tech who is on top of his game expect to earn these days?

airsupport 16th Jun 2007 22:53

As we entered this new Century there was a critical shortage of LAMEs, to the extent that even the people at CASA were VERY concerned, however after the sad events of 9/11 AND the collapse of Ansett in the same week, this critical shortage eased greatly.

Now it seems this problem is indeed on again mainly because, as someone else hinted at, a large majority of the experienced LAMEs are retiring, either just from approaching old age and/or they are fed up with the Industry.

That's a fairly huge turn over Sir Pratt,
Where abouts would this be?

There is no shortage of pilots. Just because a few more companies are advertising positions on AFAP doesn't mean there is a shortage. Highly experienced pilots? Perhaps.

I'll believe there is a pilot shortage when you see advertisements in all the local newspapers employment sections (like hairdressers, cleaners, electricians etc) and GA wages going up accordingly.

Or if you ring up a place enquiring about pilot jobs, your phone never stops ringing because your the first pilot who has rang up in years and they are desperate for help......:) (that happened to my wife in her industry where there IS a real shortage)

A GOODavionics tech is getting 70/80 per hr. However, GOOD avionics techs in Australia are a dying breed.
