AFAP vs TWU which is better
 

Ive been a member with the AFAP for 5yrs now, and i needed them to look threw an AWA,, i didnt not get a response. So I rang them the chick on the phone had no idea about anything lots on AHhhhh ummmmmmmmm ahhhhhhhh ummmmmm she didnt know wot was going on.. She said i would be called back asap..... no calls.. ive let the AWA issue go and signed it.. However whats the point of having them when they dont get back to you as promised.. sounds like a waste of cash me thinks...


Ive heard the TWU is cheaper and a much stronger union,, any one have had any dealings with them?????

Why do you need a union to hold your hand? If you don't like the terms and conditions of your job then simply resign and find another job that suits you.

Hardly the point.
What you have posted sounds like the beginning of a debate on the value of unions, as a concept. I take it you are not a member. That is your descision and a matter of personal choice which I respect (but in many ways don't agree with - my personal view is that this thought process has contributed in no small way to the current state of things, particularly in the "bottom" of the industry - discussed many times here already no doubt).
Wawa's point I think, is that having weighed the costs and benefits of joining a representative group, and decided to do so, did they do / are they doing the job you expect?
He/she chose AFAP, seems disappointed, and is looking for a possible alternative.
As a new member of AFAP, I can unfortunately report similar experiences to his/hers. I'll be watching this thread closely as I too would be interested in alternatives to representation than AFAP.
If anyone from AFAP is reading this, it took me several years to decide to join, and you're close to losing me already (and at least one other it would seem). And stories / threads like this circulate and convince many more to never consider membership in the first place.

Don’t most pilots join the AFAP so they can gain access to the Loss of Licence insurance, as it is one of the best?

On the subject of Loss of Licence, does anyone know any other company that can provide one similar to or better than the AFAP’s

I may be wrong, BUT WAWA is a pilot not an industrial lawyer.
If you believe you are fully aware of the work choices legislation and how that may affect clauses in your AWA then you are one in a million. Let me correct that, you obviously do believe you are fully aware, fact is you are probably as ignorant about work choices and AWA's as the rest of us.

With all due respect Centauras i beg to differ.

When commencing employment a pilot should look at the conditions and make his own assessment. I have been in a couple of situations where conditions have changed or promises are not kept. As a long time member of AFAP i cannot speak highly enough of the support they have offered.

Also in the event of an incident or accident just watch CASA move in and the empoyer drop you like a hot potato. Every pilot should be a member of some organisation that has his or her interests at heart.

With regards to insurance cover, i have extensively researched this, and no other scheme is within cooee on terms of cover and value.

Bear in mind that AFAP can only support you from the time you joined up. I am sure they get a heap of inquiries from people who have something happen and then try and join.

Perhaps if more people joined early in their GA career, the union would be more powerful, and we wouldnt be faced with the erosion of conditions we all now face.

6000+ hrs and 4yrs with afap,, never needed them when i did they didnt want to know me,, i guess they are overly busy lookin at awa's considerin johnnys new work place reform is screwin people over. dont need the loss on insurance anymore as my current employer provides cover for the same amount,..

just was wounderin if anyone has had any experinces with TWU.. ive heard some good things. and i guess they would have more cash behind them too...

i have found AFAP to be very good. even though only about 20 % of the pilots in our company were in the union, they endeavoured to assist all. for 1% of your pay, just the legal assistance in the event of an incident alone is money well spent.

Had a couple prior to that post bimmer1615 or do you speak another language to the rest of us?

The question is does the TWU represent pilots?
I cant find a reference to pilots in their awards.
-Their base wages are less (Bus driver 25+ pax or truck driver 100+ tonnes are both less than the GA award for SE).

Fact is that now days some of these guys will sign you up but really havent the facilities or know how to deal with our particular issues & needs. Stick with your relevant union.
(Unless your airline covered by another body this is most likely the AFAP).

It is also interesting to note that the TWU say that they are all about transport safety, however their industry (Truck drivers) has a large reputation of having an element that flaunt the rules (fudged driving times, overloading and pills to keep awake).

Its History Now And Both The Federation And The Pilots Have Now Learned A Valuable Lesson. Most Pilots Have Learned Not To Trust Just About Anybody Especially Their Employers

Any kid will tell you, if you want a pet dog you start off by asking for a horse. Unfortunately, the AFAP would ask for the dead parrot.

10000+ hours and 20+ years with the AFAP, loss of licence insurance is great but not that cheap, there aren't a lot of alternatives out there. Their representation at critical times seems OK – but only when all is on the line.

Their involvement to proactively engage in the betterment of terms and conditions would be an advantage for their members – IMHO. Some would argue the TWU is a better option, however the AFAP have the experience in aviation when push comes to shove which is why I continue to remain a member. So, a thumbs up :ok: but would like an alternative if there was one.

From what I have heard around, Skywest use the TWU, so maybe someone from there can give some advice, as for lol insurance a friend of mine has one with a company called prefsure, not sure about other details but suppose to be good rates.
